Maybe; maybe not. U Chicago is among the top 5 universities in the nation. Great employment/placement/grad school stats. U Chicago & Northwestern are both slightly under-ranked due to their non-coastal locations. |
Are you willing to name the field ? Thank you in advance. |
there are lies damn lies and statistics.... The job market is downright terrible for recent grads. My younger brother graduated from UVA with a degree in CS from University of Virginia school of Engineering & Materials Science in December 2023 (FWIW, it costs an extra 10k/year to attend school of Engineering & Materials vs. Arts and Sciences), and he also had two previous internships, one after his sophomore, and another one after his junior year. Despite all of that, he has been looking for employment for the past five months. If recent grads from CMU are having trouble looking for a job, it is much worse for UVA grads. Three of his friends are getting jobs because they have connections from family members. If you are a recent grad, and you are employed, consider yourself very lucky. |
Not sure why the need to inflate Chicago’s ranking…as it hasn’t been top 5 for years (was it ever?). Also, ridiculous to think their location somehow skews their rankings. |
True! Most are posting about CS? What about other majors? |
PP- Also - the job market for new grads is tough, no matter the school. BTW DH is a northwestern and UC grad. |

My DD graduated from UMD in CS 2+ years ago and is currently earning 120k. Guess she got lucky because right out of college she landed and intern position, then became permanent, got her TS with Poly, laid off after 2years (quite a few of them due to budget cuts) and had several offers after two weeks of looking.
So judging by the her timeframe guess there's a glut in the market. Tell the kids keep looking and apply all over - forget the entry salary it's the experience that counts. |
What is “TS with Poly”? |
| DS graduated from John Hopkins with a CS degree in 2023, and is still looking for a job. Did intern in junior and didn't receive a full-time offer. It is a tough market out there. |
Top Secret clearance with Polygraph. |
Got it…assume that helps a ton no matter your degree…people tell me having clearance can be more important than your degree and a company will train you in almost anything because getting clearance is a huge pain. |
Are the only kids getting jobs in CS and Engineering? Pretty depressing that we are getting ready to shell out our savings so kid can go back to grad school that we can't afford to help with. I guess that's how colleges claim "99%" employed or going to grad school. There should be a requirement to break out employment as well as employed in field of study. |
I hope so. DS, rising senior, is interning this summer in a job that gave him a clearance. He's not sure it's the type of work he wants to do after graduation but in this market is very happy to have a return offer while he looks for other options. |
My creative kid landed a job with a marketing agency after an internship. |
Yes it does, without the clearance her salary would be probably 30k+ less, and head hunters won't of been emailing her promising her the sky. |
