There's also the fact that alternative investments such as art are popular with rich folks. So you get the usual strong skills from of writing and critical thinking from an LAC plus some specialized knowledge that is likely rare among investment bankers. It may help in helping pick art and just being an 'interesting' person to rich clients if you are in a client-facing role. Billionaire art investors often hire art historians to build their collections and manage the documentation and showing of works. I personally know two who have this job. This is more of a stretch--but art history involves a lot of pattern recognition of things that are hard to quantify like style (assessments often involve looking at relatively unknown art works and needing to write an argument for what period, location, artist etc. you think it's from and why)--I wonder if that taps into a valued skill now that so much of what investment bankers used to do is automated. |
We suggested to DD to get into computational math research and now she makes great money at "Meta." |
Which school? Applied math or pure mathematics? |
| DD '24 graduated from HYP with a physics major and...is currently teaching at a boarding school, because she couldn't find work. 4.0 with a lot of research and tech skills but just couldn't get anything. Most of her friends are off to med school or fellowships, so she's feeling a bit distraught. I feel horrible and like I failed to support, but I know she'll figure it out. |

Did these kids without jobs not have internships? Can you help with your network?
I’ve already reminded my incoming college freshman that he needs to start networking as soon as he gets on campus and hit the ground running for an internship for next summer. |
PP with physics daughter. She had an internship, but the entry market is awful right now and hiring is not that great and very competitive, even with a high-value network. One of her childhood friends' got a job in tech and was subsequently fired the next week and then had to deal with hiring freezes. |
| DD s a rising senior Econ major at T20 and has a consulting internship this summer and just received a full time job offer after graduation. |
| DD is an English major and got a full time tech writing offer! |
| internships are key! |
This gives me hope! Can you share which school and/or if they did an internship that led to the offer? |
| DS just graduated from Uchicago in CS and Econ, currently looking for work and failing. |
Middlebury! They didn't have any internship experience before the offer, but they took a few courses in computer science and had multiple years as a peer writing tutor for the writing center. The perfect position for her. |
| SLACs are doing well and non-CS…. |
| DC goes to a out of state public university and is going to Boston for biotech research with a BS in Biochemistry. 3 summers of internships and 4.0 |
| T5 LAC, studied IR and already has an amazing apartment back here in DC! |
