Some good news: Crime is down in DC

It is crazy that most gun offenses get a slap on the wrist. Anyone with an illegal gun should go to jail for 2-3 years, no bail in between.

Yes, and it's especially unfortunate that D.C.'s locally elected government has no input into any of these decisions -- the U.S. Attorney is nominated by Biden and confirmed by the Senate (obviously).

People who were upset about the proposed criminal code and who hailed passage of the updated version ought to realize that none of that makes any difference if the feds won't prosecute the cases under the new laws.

DC essentially does not have any gun control. Hoops are required to legally own a gun, but there is no reason not to illegally carry. T

The death of that baby girl - they literally have blood on their hands allowing people to run around with guns unchecked. When they find the culprits, which they will since the “no snitch” rule does not apply to baby killers, we will no doubt see they had multiple gun and assault charges they walked on.

It's pretty easy on social media to follow all of the freecar boys and their neighborhood beefs, and even those little sh!ts are mad about that murder.

No one is claiming crime has been ERADICATED, so I don't see how any given shooting is supposed to somehow prove that crime is dropping.

I'm not trying to minimize crime or suggest that it's not bad, I'm just saying, I don't think it's particularly helpful to say that our feelings or worries about crime mean that the numbers are invalid.

Crime is significantly higher than in the 2010s. No one can take any comfort in a crime reduction until it reaches those levels.

All roads lead to COVID . COVID destroyed DC.

I think of it a little differently. All of these negative trends were emergent pre-COVID. COVID just turbo charged them.

Sometimes I think second-amendment gun nuts and the white-mediocrity Charles Allen types -- who think people arrested for violent crimes involving illegal firearms should be immediately released and lightly prosecuted -- are actually working together to make DC shittier. Like, they seem to be having meetings.

Who are the second amendment gun nuts in DC? We have some of the strictest laws in the country.

The white mediocrity types like Allen have created a situation where the criminals know the average citizen is a defenseless sitting duck due to our gun laws.

DC created the scenario gun nuts are always ranting about - lawful citizens unarmed while criminals carry around firearms with impunity. It's embarrassing that DC treats illegal firearm offense as misdemeanors or nothing at all.

Strictest laws don't matter when straw purchased guns are easily trafficked in from other states, then those caught with illegal guns are barely prosecuted (high rate of completely dropping charges or jif charges, pleading down to misdemeanor)

It’s hilarious that you think Brian Schwalb would be more aggressive at prosecuting adult crime than the USAO.

No kidding. Brian Schwalb has no interest in prosecuting juveniles (which is defined in DC as being up to age 26) for anything---no matter how violent. Lives in safe neighborhood in Ward 3. No one is spraying AR-15 rounds on HIS street. Believes that no DC juvenile offender should be held accountable; rather, they just need lots more social services---as if no one ever tried that before.

Totally agree that the feds need to be much more aggressive re prosecution. Biden should lean into it because the progressive nuts in DC, San Francisco, etc. just make it harder for Dems to win national elections.
