JMU vs. Colby

Colby is sexy because it is undoubtedly a good school. DC got into some 50-100 USNWR already but the offers to play sport are only at those two. I just worry about the isolation, size and cold. And maybe DC would do better at JMU.

Good luck OP. Bravo for seriously considering JMU. Go Dukes!

It seems as though your kid is honestly not sold on either.

Maybe you should remove the sports from the equation and ask which is the top pick.

Sure, JMU not a high academic school but also many/most people have not heard of Colby outside of certain circles. Such a weird choice my DC has! (yes, offers at both)

James Madison is D1 and Colby is D3 so this is a troll.

Colby is not as strong academically as it used to be and your DC should consider the freezing weather.

On what basis can you make that claim?

JMU had a 30%ish acceptance rate in 1990 and it is now 78%. Seems like JMU lowered their standards.

For anyone that will dispute the above…spend two seconds googling JMU acceptance rate 1990 and one of the first results will be a link to JMU’s own data.

So many pages- has OP come back at all?

Doesn’t seem like a troll to me.

Before you go to far on congratulating Op, you realize OP isn’t the one going to college, right? It’s her kid, who should be the one seriously considering JMU (or Colby or somewhere else). Or maybe OP is the one making the decision. In which case, poor kid.

Op here. Again. The whole point of my post is that these two schools are vastly different and Colby is clearly the more academic school but not necessarily the right one. Most people I know IRL and here on DCUM are horrified of the thought of not going with the higher ranked school. But the SLAC option here seems so remote and small it is not a slam dunk. DC doesn’t care about difference between D1 and D3. Would be bottom of D1 team or top of D3 team so a wash there as well. Anyway, DC will decide one way or the other soon. Just surprised DC ended up with these as final two choices.

You should really go look at Colby. It's amazing and world class. Unless your kids is set on a "big" school, Colby is a fantastic option.

Colby alum.
Give it serious consideration. It's an amazing place where all classes are taught by professors, not grad students.
Have you visited? The campus is amazing. The new athletic center is world-class. The new science buildings are fabulous. The new dorms/housing options - phenomenal.
Colby has poured huge money into the town of Waterville, and the town/gown effect has improved dramatically.
yes, Maine is cold in the winter. But it's also beautiful and the community there is wonderful.

What's the sport?

“World class”? Uh, no.
