WSJ just named UF the #1 public university in the nation.

Being from "out west" isn't exactly a credential to evaluate colleges.

Yeah……and news organizations have had to pay Trump as he threatened to take remove them.
I’m sure this “#1 public university” is just a public show for the Trump cronies so WSJ doesn’t get hit with Trump lawsuits.
Everyone is knows Florida stinks for public education and universities. Thanks to MAGA.

WSJ has had UF ranked #1 for a few years now.

UF and FSU have both been steadily climbing the USNews rankings over the past 15 years or so.

Actually, it’s down 33 spots for 2025. It is now ranked #34 among public universities.

“UF, which the Wall Street Journal in 2024 ranked No. 1 among public universities, plummeted to No. 34 in its 2025 ranking published last week. Among all universities, UF ranked No. 83 this year, down 68 spots from No. 15.”

Oh well! The #1 ranking did seem a bit provocative.

This is something that the Nazis would've done, and smacks of what they did as a precursor to extermination. Obviously, Desantis and his cronies wouldn't go that far, but pushing out existing staff and students to suit their agenda reminds of the Nazis pushing out the Jews into the ghettos.

FWIW, I am a cisgender female, moderate, sometimes leaning on the conservative side a bit. But, what I see going on in FL is kind of scary.

I was thinking DC might apply to a FL college, but I don't think that's going to happen now. DC is not gay but has a lot of lgbtq friends. FL is becoming very lgbtq unfriendly.

Seems enrollment is up and gender studies and DEI is out.
That is a good thing. Gender studies is a road to nowhere.

OP here.., as I stated, I am not a progressive, and yea, I am not a fan of "wokism". However, pushing out educators and installing politicos in leadership at an academic institution is terrible.

The only reason why they are going after recruited athletes is because the ultra right think that they are "real men", and it will push out the lgtbq students from that college.

Like I said, it's no different than the Nazis or communists kicking out Jews or any academics who disagree with their world view.

And if it's bad that liberals did that to conservatives, then I'll just remind you that "two wrongs don't make a right".

Desantis is determined to go backwards rather than forwards. If you look at history, cultures that are determined to go backwards usually end up falling or becoming third world. Intellectuals are pushed out; conservative dogma takes over.

Bah. Liberals don't have to chase out conservatives. Conservatives cannot withstand any challenge with facts. They whine and run and claim victimhood when really they just can't make an effective argument when confronted with real critical thinking.

Didn't the NAACP single out Florida with an idiotic "travel advisory" in 2023?

What's scary is you citing Nazis. You know they exterminated 6+ million people. Do you see that going on here, jackwagon?

Because, hey, slavery teaches valuable job skills!

Ben Sasse, the DeSantis pick for UF president, hides from the students because he is so unpopular on camps. He is on the record to slash majors and raise in-state tuition. The NYTimes did a great piece on his slithery ways.

I think I understand what you are trying to say, but can we just teach history, instead of “the sins of history”?

What? History includes sins, mega sins, many times over. How do you teach any history without including the sins????

That’s why Florida schools have taken out all the books about African American history.

Why do you lie? This is blatantly false.

DP. Books about AfAm history have been challenged and removed - that is not a lie. Not just from Florida schools. A Texas school removed the book Caste by Isabel Wilkerson.

In Florida a group of Black churches got together to come up with a curriculum to teach African American history in church because of the new restrictions on what can be taught in public schools.

This is what pp said... "That’s why Florida schools have taken out all the books about African American history"
And, it is a blatantly false statement.

Just to be clear, here are the standards for the teaching of African American studies in FL:
https://www.fldoe.org/academics/standards/subject-areas/social-studies/african-amer-hist.stml

NP here.

I live in FL. My teenager's high school library currently has ZERO books available on any subject.

That's right: a public high school without a library.

Why? B/c staff could not review the books for compliance with the new laws (and also deal with the challenges to individual books).

So the net effect of the laws for my kid?

ZERO books on AA history AND ZERO books on every other subject.

wow.. I'm OP, and that's why I stated that what's happening in FL regarding education is kind of scary. A politician is dictating what should or should not be taught in schools. This is a politician. Not an academic. It's purely Kids are being used as political pawns, and that is scary.
