I do understand that Chap Petersen did things that many on the left deem "conservative" but in all reality Chap was a standard liberal who was essential in building up the Democratic party in Fairfax back in the early 2000's. I think the fact that he gave credibility to Republican viewpoints on Covid restrictions/masks in schools drove the local Dem apparatus absolutely insane and they were going to stop at nothing to defeat him. He literally had a "F" rating from the NRA and was backed by Clean Virginia but apparently him thinking that 5 year olds shouldn't be forced to mask all day in 2022 was a bridge to far.

Steve Descano won simply because of braindead white liberals who read Blue Virginia and convinced themselves that Nuttall was some sort of MAGA Republican. The Asian areas in western Fairfax rejected Descano while the white liberal areas voted for him.

NoVA used to have some amazing Democrats representing the area. They supported gay rights, the environment, and strong schools. They kept crime low and were not partisan hacks who spend all day on social media fear-mongering and yelling.

The reason many people moved to this area was due to the good governance and stable environment. The rise in crime and decline of the public school is sad to see yet it seems like a majority of NoVA voters support it for whatever delusional reason.

I miss the NoVA Dems of 2015 and the sane leadership they had. The Republicans can be nutjobs at times who I wholeheartedly tend to disagree with on certain issues. I voted for all the local Dems in 2019 and didn't think twice about it. I wrongly assumed they would govern like their predecessors.

I feel politically homeless on the local level right now and I am concerned about the direction Fairfax is headed in. Long gone are the days where good governance and moderate politicians ran things up here.

Maybe I am wrong about all of this, I don't know. How does everyone else feel?

Chap lost because he assumed he'd get the vote due to name recognition. The problem was that most of us didn't know who he was and he didn't do anything to address the negative campaigning from Salim. Nothing. I got several people going door to door for Salim, but nothing other than one mailer from Chap!

What were the key reasons?

Chap Petersen never showed up in Falls Church. He ran on a slate with people who weren't on the ballot in Falls Church. He acted like we didn't exist!

He opposes an assault weapons ban.

He voted against requiring gun owners to report if their firearms were lost or stolen.

He started the "Redskins" caucus to defend the racist team name.

He sued Governor Northam over necessary COVID mask mandates.

He went on a Trumper radio show to say that "during massive resistance, at least we had a functioning school system."

He voted against allowing liquor to be delivered to your door!

Saddam Salim, on the other hand, will support banning assault weapons, protect abortion access and the right to choose, and he'll actually show up for our community.

One of the main reasons behind both Barker and Chap's loss is cultural change. Chap lost in part to underperforming in Fairfax City. Fairfax City is his base and while it did vote for him it was not by the margin he needed.

Last year, I remember when Sang Yi was largely viewed as the favorite in the mayoral race and he ended up losing narrowly to nutjob Catherine Read. Read is a loud and proud social justice warrior and slandered Sang Yi and maligned what could of been the first Asian mayor of Fairfax City.

Chap, most of the city council, and non-zombie voters despised her yet she won because in the final stretch of the race, the local Dem apparatus smeared Yi and threw all their weight behind Read.

Read narrowly winning was the canary in the coal mine for Chap. 10 years ago Read would of been way too liberal to even come close to winning in Fairfax City yet her winning should of showed Chap that the days of moderate, centrist Fairfax were dying off and that his brand of politics was no longer the perfect fit for the district.

Chap also lost because the district was drawn into Merrifield/Falls Church and the dumpy, downtrodden areas that line 29 and 50 inside the beltway. Tons of crappy Section 8 garden apartments and old neighborhoods chock full of old, white, reactionary liberals.

Agree and disagree. Reactionary social conservatives are awful but Sang Yi, Chap Petersen, and George Barker do not even come remotely close to falling in that category. Rejecting moderate, experienced politicians for unknown, unexperienced wackjobs is not the solution. These people only care about themselves and do not care at all about the quality of the community.
