People in SD-36 voted for useless SB member Stella Pekarsky and took out normal dem Barker. Barker didn't even do anything that the left would define as "conservative" yet he wasn't woke and annoying so he got the boot.

I do understand that Chap Petersen did things that many on the left deem "conservative" but in all reality Chap was a standard liberal who was essential in building up the Democratic party in Fairfax back in the early 2000's. I think the fact that he gave credibility to Republican viewpoints on Covid restrictions/masks in schools drove the local Dem apparatus absolutely insane and they were going to stop at nothing to defeat him. He literally had a "F" rating from the NRA and was backed by Clean Virginia but apparently him thinking that 5 year olds shouldn't be forced to mask all day in 2022 was a bridge to far.

Steve Descano won simply because of braindead white liberals who read Blue Virginia and convinced themselves that Nuttall was some sort of MAGA Republican. The Asian areas in western Fairfax rejected Descano while the white liberal areas voted for him.

NoVA used to have some amazing Democrats representing the area. They supported gay rights, the environment, and strong schools. They kept crime low and were not partisan hacks who spend all day on social media fear-mongering and yelling.

The reason many people moved to this area was due to the good governance and stable environment. The rise in crime and decline of the public school is sad to see yet it seems like a majority of NoVA voters support it for whatever delusional reason.

I miss the NoVA Dems of 2015 and the sane leadership they had. The Republicans can be nutjobs at times who I wholeheartedly tend to disagree with on certain issues. I voted for all the local Dems in 2019 and didn't think twice about it. I wrongly assumed they would govern like their predecessors.

I feel politically homeless on the local level right now and I am concerned about the direction Fairfax is headed in. Long gone are the days where good governance and moderate politicians ran things up here.

Maybe I am wrong about all of this, I don't know. How does everyone else feel?

I know it's tough being a closet Repuglican in Nova these days.

Eh, 42% of Nova is republican. 4 in 10 voters are republican.

You must be including Stafford in your definition of NOVA if you really think that.

No, Arlington: 23% Alexandria: 24% Fairfax: 35% Prince William: 42% Loudoun: 45% Fauquier: 65%.

Fauquier is more often than not considered NOVA than Stafford.

We voted for Saddam.

What were the key reasons?

Chap Petersen never showed up in Falls Church. He ran on a slate with people who weren't on the ballot in Falls Church. He acted like we didn't exist!

He opposes an assault weapons ban.

He voted against requiring gun owners to report if their firearms were lost or stolen.

He started the "Redskins" caucus to defend the racist team name.

He sued Governor Northam over necessary COVID mask mandates.

He went on a Trumper radio show to say that "during massive resistance, at least we had a functioning school system."

He voted against allowing liquor to be delivered to your door!

Saddam Salim, on the other hand, will support banning assault weapons, protect abortion access and the right to choose, and he'll actually show up for our community.

Ok. Almost all of the same reasons as me. -GenX

Ditto me, Gen X

banning assault weapons works oh so well for DC and Chiraq

Go into DC for your next abortion, it will always be “on demand” in the District

Other line items I agree with except for masking.

Barker came to my door. He was working hard and I appreciated that. I feel bad for him but am not shocked at what happened.

But every day I get closer to making the move. I'll just feel horrible about all the hard work I've personally put into my house and yard. Otherwise I'd be gone yesterday.

What books can't you purchase? Just because people (both Ds and Rs) don't want porn in the kids' sections of public libraries doesn't mean they are banned.

It's not "porn".

Have you read Gender Queer and Lawn Boy?

Yes, have you?

Yes. Both feature graphic depictions of sexual conduct that is inappropriate for minors.

Debatable.

Either way, it’s not porn.

And only one was a graphic novel.

Everything is debatable.

Yes despite massive disinformation campaigns the truth is still clear that masking reduces covid transmission.

It did work well! When they banned assault weapons, mass shootings went down.

You're not a Democrat. Why are you on a thread about a Democratic primary?

Standard liberals are a dinosaur. I know because I am one of them. Just like the republican party has been taken over by extremists, there is increasingly little room left under the tent for traditional, non-woke liberals.

The fact that chaps positions on covid reopening and schools were used against him is very embarrassing to me as a Democrat. It's also really scary to thi k there are still people who refuse to believe the data that many of these policies were ineffective and did harm. They would enact them again in a heartbeat.

What does “non-woke” mean? Because if to you it means “not giving a hoot about promoting social justice, ensuring equality of opportunity, and protecting historically marginalized people,” then you’re probably not a liberal.

Probably a corporate white dude who likes pot and abortions, but is annoyed that he has to think about/share power with people of color.
