Yes, schools are very different, but both have strong Economics programs. UVA was top choice (older sibling is currently at UVA), but he also likes the strong Econ program at W&M. |
My kid was accepted into College of Arts and Sciences. 4.4 GPA. 1420 sat. 9 APs 1 DE. URM. Varsity athlete in two sports, captain, leadershiip positions volunteering and at work. FCPS high school (not a desireable high school by DCURBANMOMS standards). |
Is the 4.4 GPA after 11th grade or is it after 12th grade?
|
I thought that UVA admitted by college, not major. So would it matter what intended major is within arts and sciences? |
The colleges understand how GPA is calculated at different schools and they recalculate them so they are comparable..... |
I'm pretty sure he has around or a bit below a 4.5 GPA. |
Hang in there! I think UVA is deferring a ton because a lot of my son's friends were also deffered. Best of luck in RD |
UVA loves to see first semester senior year grades. I think that’s why they defer so many applicants. |
Congrats to your kid! |
Also deferred. Now regretting EDing to UVA because there's just not a real bump to EDing at UVA, not like other schools. UVA is pretty honest about that. I have heard Dean J say that there is no admissions advantage to EDing to UVA but all the chatter/gossip was telling us otherwise. Now we're feeling like we lost that ED advantage and just wasted our ED. |
Though UVA has not said it, I wonder if they have decided to cap ED admissions at 25% of the class. For the past two years, 1000 kids have been their number, despite increased applications. Capping the number of ED admissions may help with perceptions of admission fairness, especially since it’s a public university. Then again, W&M accepts a much larger portion of their class from two ED rounds, and they are a public. Again, UVA hasn’t noted a cap, but I find it odd that the number admitted this year was the same as last year, despite 800 more ED applications. Thoughts? |
That impacts the bump for honors and AP, but in doesn’t impact what types of classes a school offers. So in my example, I suspect a lot less honors classes are offered at the lower level compared to (for example) FCPS, which leads to a lower GPA. |
Congrats to accepted!!
Hang in there to the deferred - you are STILL in the game. Condolences to those with neither acceptance or deferral. FYI - The blog says this about acceptances and deferrals with current and last year information Early Decision Applications Total number of Early Decision applications: 4,243 (3,474 last year) Total number of VA apps: 2,250 (1,845) Total number of OOS apps: 1,993 (1,629) We use completed applications in our statistics. Early Decision Offers Overall offers: 1,040 (1,097) Total VA offers: 700 (31% offer rate) Total OOS offers: 340 (17% offer rate) Enrollment Goal: ~3,900 Averaging these offer rates together is misleading because residency is a major factor in our review. If you are going to share these numbers, cite BOTH offer rates and not an average. Last year, we made just over 9,500 total offers to reach the enrollment goal. Early Decision Defers Overall defers: 1,166 Total VA defers: 643 Total OOS defers: 523 Deferred students are no longer bound by Early Decision agreements. Read more about deferral here (this link is in all defer letters). Midyear grades are due by February 15th and we're happy to take them via the student portal. |
EA comes out before first semester grades are due and UVA’s lowest acceptance rate occurs during RD. I think another post is correct that the have an inside cap on ED. But they seem to take a decent chunk of the class during EA. |
CCO told my kid that UVA generally has a GPA cut-off and it varies school by school and year by year. So, while they don’t know where the cut-off is ahead of time, CCO generally sees it in the data once the dust has settled. |
