The death of Allie Hart and the need for safer streets

Anonymous
The problem is that drivers know there are little to no consequences for any sort of dangerous driving behavior. They can kill pedestrians and cyclists in the blink of an eye and they know if they say the magic words like "I didn't see him/her" or "the sun was in my eyes" or "He/she darted in front of me", police will blame the victims and they'll get off with a traffic ticket at most.

Meanwhile, politicians like Janeese Lewis George and Kenyan McDouchie perform retail politics in DC by making it easier for dangerous drivers to renew their plates because traffic fines are, get this, inequitable. It absolutely infuriates me that politicians reward dangerous drivers instead of rewarding those who choose not to drive in DC.

This is me still waiting for criminal charges to be filed against the unnamed driver who ran over Nina Larson with her SUV in a crosswalk after rolling through an intersection on Columbia Road in dense AdMo.

Larson died over a year ago and not a single thing has been done to make that intersection safer for pedestrians. Not...one...thing. No blinking red lights, no HAWK signal. Nothing.

Given her young age of 5, I wonder if she was just learning to ride and perhaps she should have stopped at the intersection, but she was a novice beginner bike rider and couldn’t stop her bike? Personally, I think 5 is too young to be riding a bike across intersections.

No. Stop. Just, no.

Stop what, exactly? As a parent of 2 young kids, a 5 year old belongs on a bike trail or right next to a parent otherwise.

Operators of two ton pieces of machinery are solely responsible for the safe operation of their death mobiles. Nobody said you had to like it.

Children have every right to use their streets without getting murdered by careless drivers.

That’s really helping Ali now, isn’t it?

Just let the blood of innocent children like Ali flow through DC streets so that operators of two ton death mobiles have as little responsibility and culpability as possible for, checks notes, not murdering innocent children with their vehilces.

Nice mantra you got there.

It's too late to help Allie, but it will help other children. Did you read the article?

This is what I don't get about this whole incident, as well as the Nina Larsen killing. Car companies lobbied for years to have complete takeover of the streets and shunt pedestrians to one small area of the road (crosswalk) where they are "allowed" to walk. And then drivers kill kids IN the crosswalk and there are zero repercussions. Seriously bananas.

Your points and PP’s point are not mutually exclusive.

You don't always have the right of way just because you are in the crosswalk. Also, the crosswalk is often not the safest place to cross. It sucks, but car vs pedestrian accidents will always be a fact of life.

The Kindermoord contingent has been heard from.

Right so then pedestrians should be allowed to cross mid block without being ticketed or with the driver being held accountable. I always cross mid block (jaywalking! HORRORS!) because I was hit by a driver in a crosswalk and know first hadn't what a bat ou. I absolutely had the right of way (walk sign).

Not sure what scenarios a pedestrian would not have the right of way in a crosswalk but if there are any (besides actual red light/ don't walk) then we should just do away with crosswalks altogether and give the streets back to the people. Restrict cars to 5mph and arrest drivers for striking pedestrians. Make drivers accountable for piloting heavy machinery into people. The great experiment of cars in the city has clearly failed if we are debating if a five year old or a professional driver is the one accountable for the child's death.

Sometimes accidents happen. It’s certainly possible for there to be a pedestrian/cyclist fatality where the driver isn’t at fault. I am in favor of traffic calming measures, btw.
