Mannnnnn……. Shut da FUQ up

Who da FUQ is you?!?!!

Posting real tough in “DC Urban Mom” - would never have the cojones to say something like that to his face.

I’m sure you consistently perform your job year in and year out at the level nationally Bill and Capital do Mr/Ms Anonymous?

Put your name on your comment so folks can judge your ability to coach and get kids recruited - WTF is wrong with you…

What adult writes like this?! Seriously?

Coaching matters. The particular year's/team's coach is more important than the club.

Coaching is huge. You go to tournaments and you can tell the well coached teams vs those that are not. If you have a bad coach the top girls leave ASAP and find a good one. They could care less about the jersey, but how the coach will help them. For the most part the top clubs have the top coaches.

However, travel lacrosse is just one piece of the puzzle. What I learned with my second daughter (more motivated than first), you really need to do way more outside of the club if the girl wants to be really good - Division I good. If that's not the girls goal, totally fine, playing only with her travel team will set her up to be a good high school player. However, if the girl has higher aspirations, you do need to consider strength training, agility training, extra lacrosse sessions with someone that knows what they're talking about, etc. Most travel teams practice once in the fall, maybe twice a week in the Spring then have lulls with no training.

I say this because many think once they are on a "travel" team (many of which are called travel but marginally better than rec. teams - sorry) they think they are on the road to college glory. If your daughter doesn't have a stick in her hand most days of the week, it's hard to compete against the "Blue Bloods" in Maryland and LI that see lacrosse as a way of life. Not trying to sound condescending, just based on daughters experiences and my own observations.

Good perspective on this. Outside of the top 2-3 programs in the DMV area, the rest of the travel clubs are nothing more than expensive Rec level teams.

If you aren't working continually to get better, you will quickly get passed by. There's a reason the top 10 clubs/teams are all from Maryland and/or NY.

Agree with all this as well. No one ever became "elite" practicing once or twice a week.

To me, it comes down to a conversation with the kid. What is the kids goal? If it is to play for a Div. I school, an explanation of what is needed/required practice-wise to reach that goal should be on the table. If afterwards, the kid is willing to commit the time and effort (and you the $$), it's time to get to work. If that level of commitment makes them squeamish (it's not for everyone), I'm probably not spending $225 for this clinic and $40 for this session, etc. The kids enthusiasm and work ethic needs to match the dollars I'm spending.

Bill is not a great coach, he always inherits players so it looks like he is great, but he is not. He just hams it up with the parents and players and pretends to be everyone’s friend.

The belief seems to be clubs have little to no impact on developing players and the strength of teams is simply luck of draw by year and location. This is not a ringing endorsement for parents to spend what amounts to $30-40K+ in lax club plus travel fees over many years of club lacrosse. And this doesn’t even take into consideration the time invested to get to practices and tournaments.

Playing with and against other good players is an important part of getting better. The club matters for a few reasons none of which are related to development - a drill is a drill is a drill - what matters is culture and reputation. Club choice matters starting in middle school but much more so in hs because: 1) clubs that win get noticed. 2) clubs that get noticed get the better players and the better coaches. 3) club coaches and owners/directors set expectations for behavior at practice (focus and drive, no goofing off, respect for coaches…) and personal time (practice on your own every day). 4) coaches set team behavior - me ball v team play. 5 college coaches notice all of the above.

That’s it in a quick summary. All the developmental talk is mostly bs. Drills, speed and agility, small side play and scrimmages are almost all identical because most coaches played in same small world do know same stuff plus add in YouTube and easy availability to find instruction.

All good points. Appreciate the knowledge.

You can't say nice things on these threads, that's when they stall.

Ha ha ha.

Straight truth shuts it down too. Can’t really argue with it.

It’s long past time someone shut down the whining about “Capital poaches players from the programs that developed them”. That’s just such a ridiculous complaint. Players develope in a myriad of ways and the club doesn’t matter too much if the player is doing what they are supposed to, giving big effort, and practicing on their own. Extra lessons and experiences always help too - exposure to other players, other coaches, other teams. Once a player is aiming to be recruited is when the club name matters the most and that’s just to get a kid noticed/get college coaches on the sideline.

I’m not sure I agree with the comments on player development. I do agree if players are interested in playing in college the club name, history, and connections make a big difference. Capital has this history of success. Pride had its chance with a top 10 2023 team and completely dropped the ball.

The poaching comment makes no sense because Capital was always a high school program. Just because some former middle and elementary school programs have decided to go through high school now doesn't mean that Capital is now poaching those players. Capital is doing what they have always done. The other clubs are the ones who are attempting to get in on the high school program. No idea how that goes against Capital?
Anonymous
Poaching? They have open tryouts, as to Pride, Stars, etc.
Anonymous
Yeah, I don’t think it’s poaching when every girl wants to and is excited about trying out for Capital.
