I absolutely love the name Salem for a girl, but according to the books it is a Jewish male's name - combined with the whole Salem witches thing, I don't think I'd have the guts to actually name my daughter that, if I ever had a daughter. Anyone know any Salems? Boy or girl?

Honest thoughts: Delilah has a pretty strong Biblical connotation (think Samson and Delilah), so make sure you like the stories before using. Lila is a less-charged possibility.

Don't like Paxton--seems made-up to me, and that's not my style.

We're not religious so Delilah does not hit us that way, it makes me think of the Grateful Dead song.

I am a teacher and I had a Salem in my class last year - a boy. He was from Saudi Arabia. It was pronounced - Sah-LEM

Salem is a very common name in Arabic, particularly in the Persian Gulf countries - but as the PP said, it's a male name not female. Half the Kuwaiti royal family is a Salem, either as a first or a middle (patronymic) name.

I grew up going to school with a boy named Harper - so in my mind it will always be a boys name.

Incidentally, he is the son of a very famous rock star...

Boy - Ghisleen or Arne
Girl - Esmee or Rhys

Most of the names posted here are shockingly boring. Last names as first names will soon be passe. My sister considered naming her daughter "Kennedy." I'm glad she didn't. Something like "Kenit" or "Nedia" would be so much more interesting.

The E was added by mistake.

Lisa Marie Presley just named one of her twin daughers Harper.

I know, I was surprised and I'm hoping it doesn't become overly popular. My husband and I have liked the name Henry for about 8 years now and it seems that a lot of celebs are going for that name now. But, I still don't meet too many Henrys in day to day life.
.
I seriously hate when parents give their daughters boys names. Riley,Harper, and Finley. Eww,Eww,Eww ALL BOYS NAMES!!! If I didn't have a face to the name I would think they were boys.

No other NFL fans out there finding this funny, besides me?

I find it terribly funny!

I have a girlfriend whose two girls are named Kennedy and Logan. What's that make you think of?

Kennedy and Logan makes me think she has two sons not daughters

Are you from the South? In the SOUTH it is very feminine to use these types of names for girls. Decades old tradition as well, nothing new.

I'm southern and I have only ever heard the name Finley for a girl. In the south it's also common to use a family surname as a first name.

Harper Lee is the author of To Kill a Mockingbird She is from Alabama. I assumed most people have read her novel, but maybe not.

Is that book based on the old movie of the same name?

No, back in the olden days, books came first, then movies. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, for instance, was written decades before the movie version came out.

(Poor Harper Lee, forgotten already! Actually, her full name was Nelle Harper Lee.)
