This person has had this theme for a while now and is a very bitter and pathetic person. Keep an eye out for this theme in other blogs and please temper your responses accordingly.

Also, there's another word for "prepping". It's called tutoring or learning. Remember that this person wants you to believe that instruction or learning outside of MCPS is wrong. That's why I believe this person is a very bitter MCPS employee or board member.

Don't fall for it. Any learning a child does out of the classroom will give that child an advantage in Life. The more parents encourage this type of appreciation for learning, the more it will rub off onto the children.

Rather than MPCS staff, I think it's actually parents who are really invested in their kids on travel teams. No time left to tutor, so they want to level the playing field.

No time or motivation. So take the devious way out. Make this about equity so that their kids can get a leg up. Divide and rule the minorities. It is a progressive game.

LOL

So how much do the Koch's pay you to post this nonsense? The kids we've been talking about are hardly gifted. Sure, a few present as slightly above average after spending tens of thousands on prep but does that really matter?

Basically, you feel that wealthy people should be able to buy spots in these programs and those who aren't as fortunate should be denied equal access to these programs.

We get it.

Atlantic is hardly a right wing publication. Read the article. You may actually get a broader perspective instead of just spouting some out of context talking points.

DP. Nobody here claimed that The Atlantic was a right wing publication. But to be fair, the linked article is by David Frum, whose own website describes him thus:

David Frum has been active in Republican politics since the first Reagan campaign of 1980. From 2014 through 2017, Frum served as chairman of the board of trustees of the leading UK center-right think tank, Policy Exchange. In 2001-2002, he served as speechwriter and special assistant to President George W. Bush. David Frum holds a BA and MA in history from Yale and a law degree from Harvard, where he served as President of the Federalist Society.

There's a lot of these right-wing talking points here these days. It really makes me suspect.

Middle school magnet is now a lottery for coming year too - as per just published MCPS guidelines. I suspect high school is going that way too. The Asian purge is on.

People chase the magnets for their atypical demographics / peer groups claiming to be dying for enrichment. If they rig the selection criteria to reflect typical demographics I suspect we will see the effect accelerate that magnet programs were designed to suppress which is middle class flight form poor schools. Without prestige magnets the entire DCC would be in trouble

He's a Republican. By definition, he hates public schools or any use of tax dollars that doesn't help make the rich richer.

I just like having my child challenged in class because when they are not, as we discovered in middle school, they tend to not bother doing anything at all.

I'm sure that's not just the case for affluent families like ours. Probably a lot of brilliant kids whose parents don't have the time or the means to advocate for them. It's also pretty easy, as a nice white lady, to get my concerns addressed. Not so easy if English isn't your first language. Or if the school's administration has written you off. You wouldn't believe the number of times I was told "those other parents just aren't involved." Really? Maybe they just can't make a PTA meeting at 7 after 14 hour day when their family only has the one car... Especially when they've gone to a few and just end up listening to a bunch of Takoma park types complain about the lack of organic milk and the need for more magnet enrichment... At least that's what I like was happening at those meetings.

But how would I know? I didn't go. Just the administration assumed I was "involved." Hrm. Wonder why?

What would be the most equitable for schools would be tracking. Tracking at every school with multiple points of entry--indeed a fluid structure for entry--into advanced classes. Some kind of assessment that would allow kids to feel engaged in the process, like it was something they'd earned, and not just something they'd been fast-tracked into by their parents.

MCPS is full of full-bloodied rabid Democrats. And our kids were kept out of in-person school for over a year. Some may rightfully argue that by definition, the Democrats do not value or support public education one iota.

Oh, this will 100% lead to middle class families leaving the county. No doubt.

Wealthy families can stay put and pay for private. The lower-income families will likely stay. Without a strong middle-class, the county will flounder. You can’t support a school system by attracting ONLY lower-income families. Sad, but true. We have seen it in so many urban school districts in the US.

What do you mean IF they rig it? It's been rigged for years. All you got to do is go drop $10k at the prep center and bob's your magnet! It's set up so only the wealthy elite can attend. This is how it has worked for decades.

Who's Bob? Anyway these schools have had great results for so many years. Blair had 4 natiinal finalists in the Regeneron talent competition. That's almost 20 kids in a class of hundred. In one of the most prestigious competitions in the country. So many other achievements. By rigging? You have no idea. Do you even have a kid who is applying for one of the magnets? Just jealous, destructive people. And some parents who know better are turning a blind eye because they think the only chance their kids have of getting in is a lottery. What's the point of getting into a watered down version of the school? Better to stay in the home school.

Opposed to drinking purple drink and watching Cartoon Network? Success is navigating the seas not necessarily being the most gifted swimmer. What does being the smartest barista at the Starbucks get you? My order

I am a life long Democrat. I am ashamed that close minded people like you are also Democrats. Now I know how Republicans who saw the destruction that Trump was doing must have felt. Stop with the assumptions and attacking people with such weak arguments - so embarrassing.

Get ready for home prices to fall in Silver Spring and Takoma Park. And go up further in W school catchment areas. Bethesda, Potomac.
