I'm sure that's not just the case for affluent families like ours. Probably a lot of brilliant kids whose parents don't have the time or the means to advocate for them. You wouldn't believe the number of times I was told "those other parents just aren't involved." Really? Maybe they just can't make a PTA meeting at 7 after 14 hour day when their family only has the one car... Especially when they've gone to a few and just end up listening to a bunch of Takoma park types complain about the lack of organic milk and the need for more magnet enrichment... At least that's what I like was happening at those meetings.

But how would I know? I didn't go. Just the administration assumed I was "involved." Hrm. Wonder why?

What would be the most equitable for schools would be tracking. Tracking at every school with multiple points of entry--indeed a fluid structure for entry--into advanced classes. Some kind of assessment that would allow kids to feel engaged in the process, like it was something they'd earned, and not just something they'd been fast-tracked into by their parents. [/quote]
