...if Putin had took questions from the press in the Oval Office you would have been calling for any President's head - Bush, Obama, it doesn't matter. As men like to say 'A man's home is his castle' and a foreign leader, especially one of minuscule importance like the U.K., does not get to dictate how the terms are set in our Oval Office. That is why Boris got his ass spanked in Afghanistan and if he doesn't stop - won't get his coveted free trade deal until after the 2024 elections. |
How exactly did Boris Johnson get his "ass spanked in Afghanistan"? Mildly curious. After all, it was Biden's botched withdrawal without advance notice to all our allies (not just the British) that was behind the mess. |
Yeah, this is wrong. The UK was getting its people out as the US was trying to figure out how to get its people out without admitting they'd been left behind. UK knows Biden isn't all there. Boris needs to show his people at home what a train wreck Biden is since it is actually difficult to believe until you see it. |
DP. One more thing.... when Boris Johnson suggested taking a couple questions, Biden's response was.... "Good luck." Biden had no intention of taking any questions because he was told he couldn't. |
You didn't hear about the U.K. outcry about their soldiers not getting everyone out? And the fact that their Foreign office mistakenly outed the names and locations of ALL their translators to the Taliban? Or the fact that the outrage was so bad at home that Johnson fired his Foreign Secretary/Secretary of State the week before he came to Washington, D.C.? All that happened because Biden treated Johnson as his under-secretary instead of an equal. Letting the U.K. in on the little submarine deal with Australia was our way of allowing them to have some pride back. | Yep. We stabbed France in the back to save face with England. This sure is great foreign policy! So glad the "Grownups" are in the room. |

In particular even the U.K. press acknowledged that it was humiliating that the U.K. was no longer powerful enough to hold Kabul without the U.S. When the U.S. decided to leave, it was over. They were scrambling to get out because they knew it would be as you say 'bloodshed' without U.S. marines to back them up.
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-58305185 Despite the fact that the UK spends tens of billions of pounds every year on defence, the equivalent of around $70bn – second only to the USA in Nato – the Ministry of Defence is ruling out remaining in Afghanistan without the US, warning it would be too dangerous and that “without this partnership, it would be impractical to secure the airport and continue the evacuation mission”. https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/afghanistan-troops-withdrawal-boris-biden-b1907157.html |
More like gave England a bit of saved face. And I'd say 'stabbed' is a bit of a overreaction. France had signed that deal in 2016 and still hadn't produced suitable assets in 2021. On top of the fact that our technology was superior. It would be like the Australia being offered a six-months late shipment of Dell computers from France and the U.S. said 'hey we've got enough Apple for you that we can send it tomorrow and it won't breakdown for 30+ years'. Simply makes strategic sense - from a military perspective and a economic perspective. Although I'm sure we'll make up the insult to the French somehow.

And, like everything else the past 8 months, Biden handled it poorly. I truly cannot think of one thing he has handled well. |
I would hope that eventually the French would join the AUKUS alliance. They have a very capable military and significant strategic concerns in the Indo-Pacific. It’ll take time sure but maybe certain subcontracts can be let to them to offset the losses from losing the submarine sale (maybe the purchase of a Mistral class ship?). I would hope the Indians and Japanese also consider joining to further stability in the region. |
Covid. Compared to where we were a year ago this is so much better. |
Covid. As a resident of a non-red state I approve. From a FP perspective though watching Biden move is amusing. He's not dumb like Trump. To put it crudely, he's skipping the foreplay and going straight for the action. People forget - Biden was Chair/Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations committee since 1997. So he's seen it all. Met with thousands of dignitaries. Known every U.K. Prime Minister since Edward Heath in 1972 (Thatcher didn't even show up until 1979) and every French President since Pompidou. He knows where he can push and where he can slide. He also knows that if you want to accomplish something via normal diplomatic channels *you send Ambassador A to meet with Minister B then Undersecretary A places a call to B then a year later you actually have face to face meetings between the heads of state who agree to C but Country D objects and wants to be brought in with E*. It's whatever. It would take years. In 8 months by brushing aside the foreplay if you will, ordering his foreign team to set out the contracts, and move on - we've gotten out of Afghanistan and signed a multilateral deal with Australia. This is just stuff Biden wants to get off his desk before he gets to meatier plans of substance. I have to wonder what he has up his sleeve next. |
That doesn’t mean he remembers any of it. He is deteriorating and sadly, the WH is nothing more but a daycare for seniors at this point. |
