I detest Vance and adore bell hooks, but that article was weak. I can’t even tell what we’re supposed to be seeing in the book covers? The font on the first book’s title looks the same or at least similar but otherwise I don’t see any similarities?

Possibly, but surely someone at a publishing house has the very easy job of searching potential titles— to avoid confusion and lawsuits? So someone knew about the similar titles and signed off on it — even if they somehow didn’t realize how well known bell hooks and her books are.
