I detest Vance and adore bell hooks, but that article was weak. I can’t even tell what we’re supposed to be seeing in the book covers? The font on the first book’s title looks the same or at least similar but otherwise I don’t see any similarities?

My theory: the first one was semi-intentional or at least subconsciously informed by seeing hooks’s book around (whether by Vance or the publisher, sometimes book titles rely surprisingly little on the author’s wishes), but the second one is coincidental. After all, I can think of at least one other book called Communion  (the Whitley Streiber one about aliens in the 80s, which freaked me the eff out as a kid!), and the term has an obvious relationship to Catholicism.
