I'm very sorry for what happened to you, PP. I was not molested as a child, so I don't have this experience. But from what I've read, there are good and bad ways to handle it, and still, it can help or not help the victims and molester. I don't think the Duggars handled it perfectly, but I don't think they handled it terribly. What I think they did that was terrible was immediately and for years and years afterward living in a reality show, in public. That's what many of the Duggar critics are most critical of. |
Do you think that the duggars thought that the 10 years later, some person would expose this to the world? Why would they think that? They agreed to do a special on TLC called 14 kids and pregnant again, or something like that. It's not like they were expecting to get a tv show and become famous. It's pretty sad to me that somebody put this story in a tabloid when it involves a story about children being molested by their older brothers. Whoever did this did not have good intentions, they did it to sell a story. So what about them? What does that say about the tabloid? Why is everyone so angry at the duggars, but the tabloid gets a pass? That's what confuses me. |
The tabloid never would have been interested in the Duggars if they hadn't put their family on television. Over and over and over again. And used those television appearances to advocate for their kind of sexual mores and purity. That is why the tabloid is interested, because the Duggars made themselves into public figures by choice. |
Does anyone agree that there is a media double standard at play here? Whether you are anti or pro Duggars.
"Media plays up Duggar abuse, played down Lena Dunham admission" http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/jun/7/joseph-curl-media-plays-up-duggar-abuse-played-dow/?page=1 |
I agree with this. This happened and was handled long ago. There have been no further incidents since he was 15 years old. Dragging this out was to sell rag magazines that most people would rarely give any credence to. |
Well, did Lena Dunham hold herself up as a paragon of virtue and family values? I also saw plenty of unflattering media coverage of her book. I'm not a fan of either her or the Duggars, by the way. |
I don't understand why Christians have to be perfect lest they be vilified. Everyone sins, everyone has issues they need to deal with. It doesn't negate everything else in their lives. |
Was her show suspended with a cancellation hanging over it? |
Here's a story on how In Touch got their scoop: http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/to-get-the-josh-duggar-story-intouch-utilized-solid-investigative-journalism/2015/06/07/f4dabc4a-0bbe-11e5-95fd-d580f1c5d44e_story.html?hpid=z15 |
You don't think a large part of the Duggar message was that their way was the best way? Their way not only has an unfortunately high incidence of incest and sexual molestation, it's also dishonest. I'm Christian. I don't think Christians can or should be perfect, or that anyone else can or should be. |
Not that I know of. Maybe because there weren't any police reports? A memoir is different from a police report. If I recall correctly, she backtracked on several things she wrote in the book, including an account of a rape. Write HBO if you'd like to get Girls cancelled. I think everyone should let the networks know if they don't like the programming or agree with their support of certain shows. |
The latest Duggar wedding had over 4m viewers. Lena Dunham's show has around 700,000 viewers, with a high of 1.1m last year. Comparatively, she's a nobody. |
Everyone feels this way about what they hold important. |
Sure, but not everyone goes on TV to broadcast those beliefs. Not everyone is politically active. Not everyone makes statements condemning exactly the thing they are harboring. |
I don't even think that's accurate. I hold my life choices very important but I don't think anyone else needs to live like I do. |
