This is so tragic. Mental illness is hard to treat and people tend to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs.
Rob Reiner’s movies are like a hall of fame in modern cinema. |

The sister reported her brother as a dangerous person.
As someone with schizophrenia and bipolar in our family I can relate. |

When mentally ill family members are in a mania or psychosis there is not much that the other family members can do. It is legal to have untreated mental illness in the US. |
Well at some point society has the weigh the rights of the individual against the rights of the general population. |
| It’s interesting he kept his sister alive. Apparently she lives next door and found the bodies. I couldn’t even imagine that pain and trauma. |
He didn't "keep her alive." She wasn't in the housd. |
That will never happen. People wouldn’t tolerate what that actually looks like. |
Too bad the sister didn’t make a police report detailing why her brother was a dangerous person. Maybe they could have had an involuntary psychiatric ward admission. |
| RIP Rob Reiner…thank you for so many wonderful movies. Godspeed to you and Michelle. |
Absolutely. The patients have advocates who will come to the meeting at the end of their mandatory stay. If they don't stay voluntarily, they can go. They have to prove they have a "plan" and the advocate will argue for the plan's validity even as the family members know it's not real or likely to happen. HIPPA also means family members may not know exactly what the exact diagnosis or prognosis is. If a person is paranoid (and many are) they don't trust people who have their best interests. |
Unitl they are threatning or commit an act of violence, then how do you weigh those rights? You can't put everyone with a mental illness or addiction in a locked facility just in case they were 1 of the very few who might go on to commit a violent crime. People with mental illness are not more likely to commit a violent crime than the general population. When they do commit a crime, it is more likely to be directed at family and more likely to be unrelated to drugs / gang etc and therefore it makes the news more often. |
They do but they can also become burdens on society. This is due to misplaced advocacy and good intentions but people living on the street is not good for them or anyone else. And then you have public places like libraries, hospitals, jails and parks that end up housing where they end up. Some just need housing but many are mentally ill and don't want help but need it. Some people actually need involuntary commitment and would benefit from it. |

Conan O'Brien's Christmas party tends to be a big deal. And that's where all the anger seems to have boiled over, which ultimately led to these murders.
Guessing the children of celebrities will not be welcome at parties going forward. |
| His mother said experts told them nick was lying to them and that they were wrong to believe that. I wonder if that meant experts thought he was a psychopath? |

Not sure if anyone has already said this- and it sounds so dramatic, but when I first saw the headline and saw a family photo- that one son did not look right- in every photo. Check it out... I got a shiver down my spine.
later in the day I heard the son was thought to be the perp. This is so dreadful. I too, was a young kid LOVING the humour that Carl and Rob brought into the world. That will be their legacy. I wish time-bombs like this would just go off somewhere and implode alone instead of turning outward and hurting others. You are on the wrong side of good and evil if you post something offensive toward the victims/family after a situation like this. |
