2016: Why didn't Hillary Clinton campaign in Wisconsin?!

2024: Why did Kamala Harris campaign in Wisconsin instead of going to a white tie dinner in New York City?!

The election tradition white tie dinner… which was carried live across cable, YouTube, twitter, etc. and creates hundreds of millions of impressions via viral clipped content and Friday news articles?

No one cares about the Al Smith dinner

Trump gets great ratings. He’s actually not lying when he reminds people about all the time. It can be easily fact checked too

I don't think he does so much anymore. Maybe I'm wrong - but it really feels like everyone knows and is tired of his schtick. Sometimes he does something new - like gently swaying on stage for 39 minutes instead of giving a speech - and that gets people's attention again. But I think the shine is gone.

This. Harris’ ratings for her Fox ratings tanked his. He’s an old has-been. One of those shuffling tap dancers who barely move.

You're the only person who thought he was funny. His screed laced with profanity.

Not spot on. Just a lame attempt at shaming by Gaffigan.

This reminds me of the Post's supposedly critical article on Harris's managerial skills: she expects staff to be prepared, she understands the subject before the briefing, etc. In other words, Oh, how awful of her to be on top of things!

And now Gaffigan: Oh, how awful that Kamala is doing a ton of campaigning and interviews, presenting her views to a range of audiences! Tsk!

He's following the Miss Manners rule of only teasing people about things they're proud of.

And yet Harris herself is not prepared, as we've witnessed in her interviews. What would you do on Day 1 as President? Um, I grew up in a middle class background...

Right, right. That and policies, including specific percentages and dollar figures, and an 85 page economic plan. So vague!

If only she could come up with something as sound as tariffs and turning the military on citizens who disagree with you.

Given that Trump has blown through every tradition from not doing 60 minutes to not participating in a peaceful transfer of power, I think you can give attendance at an elite coastal event a rest.

Or attending his successors inauguration.

I watched parts of this and thought his delivery sounded slurred, slow, and off. These posters unsurprisingly made it out to be much more dynamic. And of course he didn’t come up with the few zingers that he delivered (eg the Whitmer joke). Are you kidding me, lol?! He’s never been that sharp, even in his prime. He probably didn’t even know about the story to begin with. He already admitted that people at Fox wrote jokes for him.

(Sorry if this was already posted, I couldn’t bear to read the entire thread)

Lots of normal, moderate Catholics have left the Church since the abuse scandals, coverups, and restitution payments. I have so many politically moderate friends who do not want to raise their kids in the Church, even if they otherwise received a fantastic education from Catholic schools. Congregations are getting older and more conservative. Young people converting to Catholicism tend to hard-right and are embracing TradCath ideologies, seeing it as a new form of conservative Republican networking.

It will be interesting to see how Latino and African-American Catholics react to the changes happening among the white elite who still control the power levers of the American Catholic Church. They are not nearly as radical in their ideologies.

Latinos who are religious are leaving the church for non-denominational/evangelical. Most are cafeteria/cultural Catholics at this point.

Harris can formulate policies because she is of sound body and mind. Elderly angry men just yell nonsense

The Molly Shannon skit with Kamala was terrible and anyone saying otherwise is in denial. The skit and movie it was based was released 25 years ago. The movie Superstar (1999) was a huge box office flop. The skit was on SNL when they averaged 5-6 million viewers in the late 90s. It’s niche.

Translation: Very few people know who the hell that washed up actress is in 2024, let alone her SNL character from 25 to 30 years ago. Even if you did recognize her, it frankly just wasn’t funny at all.

The brain trust who came up with that idea are Gen X cat lady “strategists” who were watching TV alone on Saturday nights in the 90s. Or just some lazy millennial grifters who came upon it while googling Catholic characters for five minutes.

I did recognize her and I thought it was all very clever.

Most NYS and NYC politicians show up to this event.

+1. Considering they are the darlings of Hollywood it’s incredible what a humorless crowd they are. They are happiest when they are miserable.
