Why not judge everyone by how they act at the new school, rather than trying to influence their reception. This is not a nice line of posts. |

This is what I hate about forums..the people from St. Pats who were accepted all now going to be under scrutiny possible by some jerk who wants to trash them on a forum. I know most of these families and they are nice..so I don't buy this. That being said..I love that people would want to hurt a child because there parents were idiots..if in fact this was true. What does this say about the complaining people? |

Apart from the obvious - Beauvoir - which schools regularly send boys to St. Albans?
NPS, St. Pat's, Norwood and WES always have grads that go on to St. Albans.
I hope St. Pat's is selective in whom they are recommending to STA. I was sitting next to a few moms from there having coffee and I overheard one loudly say "I don't mind minorities as long as they can pay their own way." It was odd coming from her as she had an accent and appeared to be a minority herself. Not the first time I have heard these sort of elitist comments. STA is an amazing and diverse school and does not need families that look down on minorities.

I found out this weekend that a family from St. Pat's that is notorious for being exclusive and having strong opinions openly about minorities etc was accepted to STA. This is very shocking and disappointing to say the least. I am surprised that St. Pat's recommended this family, as the mom is known for making very derogatory statements about minorities being on financial aid and other subjects that most find offensive. Not sure how this happened but STA is a very inclusive community.
WASPs being WASPs - shocking. Absolutely shocking.
No this attitude isn't shocking. As someone with a lower SES, my family has experienced this within the STA community, non verbally, but with patronizing smiles. STA (admin) really can't control tasteless behavior when it comes to parent-sponsored events. |
I do not think anyone wants to hurt the child, they just want to avoid the parents. |
No you want to not let the child in because of parents..that hurts the child. Call it what it is. |
+1
Just let those parents know that this sort of talk and attitude is not shared by the community at large. Otherwise, you risk tarnishing your reputation. |
Wow...7 boys from st.pat's got into STA for 7 th hmmmmm
That has to be a record. I wonder why this could be... |
Despite the sarcasm, I would say (1) St. Pat's is getting strong kids; (2) St. Albans is getting great apps from St. Pat's because it is a "hot school" for boys from St. Pat's right now, because of Peter Barrett's connection, the Episcopal schools thing, and the fact that the current St. Albans AD is a parent; and (3) the current St. Albans AD is a parent and probably thinks highly of the school and the lines of communication are very good right now. Don't over-emphasize (3), however -- STA uses a committee structure for Admissions with professional staff and faculty. They're not letting in unqualified kids, or even ho-hum candidates, just because the AD is a parent there. |
Actually, 8 boys in the current 6th grade class got offers of admission to St Albans. One choose Sidwell instead but he was not the only one who also got an offer from Sidwell. Three kids got offers from Sidwell although only one choose to accept. Five girls from St Pats are going to NCS for 7th next year, as well as one to GDS, one to Maret, one to Landon and four to Potomac, although most of these schools extended offers to to more than one St Pats applicant. Regardless of folks on this board who are stuck on "the big three" for the early years, there are other exceptionally strong schools out there that do not go through highschool. St Pats is at the top of that heap but there are some others. St Pats has a very strong academic curriculum that manages to differentiate at both ends of the learning curve and does as well with underperforming kids as with the strongest students. All students from K up now have Spanish as a required subject, remedying a past weakness of the school's. Also, the arts are highly valued at St Pats and these programs are equally as strong as academics. And, most recently, the sports program has become much stronger, although it could still use a bit more emphasis on real athletic skills. Overall, students who graduate from St Pats in 6th and 8th are some of the strongest candidates out there applying to the area's upper schools and nationally recongized boarding schools (Andover, Choate, Deerfield, etc...). This is not howver, the first year seven boys have gone from St Pats to St Albans for 7th grade. The same number went two years ago. |
One girl is going to Landon? How's that?
Your credibility is suspect. |
22:05 you crack me up. Number 3 was the correct answer. AD at St.Pat's. give me a break.
As for Deerfield, Choate etc... That is family legacy in most cases...and it is far far more difficult to get into those schools than STA ... As for St.Pats athletics....you aren't really going to go there are you? And no, I am not the girl attending Landon...lol |
Scratch the surface. Non-Beauvoir Form Cs have NCS moms, StA fathers and StA siblings. That's less true at other entry points, but demonstrated athletic success becomes much more important for those seeking admission later in the game. |
Who your parents are or are not can benefit children throughout their life but sometimes it can hurt them. No one wants to hurt anyone but yes absolutely- if there is another student as qualified with parenrs who are a better fit than yes I think people would prefer to have them be admitted. You are naive if you don't think one or two people can negatively impact a community- mostly because the things are done and said out of school where the school has no control however the residual affects are felt at school. |
Do schools ever renig and cancel admission this late in the admission season or is it too late? |
