The Republicans are operating on a notion of "we need to cut SNAP because it will force lazy moochers to work" except a sizeable percentage of SNAP recipients are already working. and the remainder who aren't working often have issues such as disabilities that make it hard for them to work, including disabled veterans. That is who they will be cutting off.

Work for lower wages? I recall an article a little while back talking about how 13.5% of the Walmart employees in Ohio were collecting SNAP. They already can't afford to feed their families yet MAGA wants to cut their SNAP *and* pay them less.

It's unreal.

12.3 percent of Americans are on snap benefits. It would make a massive economic dent. It is going to drop food sales in low income areas and the theft is going to go through the roof.

It's good if it is a short time, because then no real damage, and also people will credit Democrats for wanting to stop premium increases.

You still don't get it. Republicans have got all three levers of power AND, unlike in Trump's first term, he and his cabinet and department heads are not heeding any laws or the Constitution. The Constitutional crisis is at the door. This term, the Trumpian mandate is "let's do all the illegal things and overwhelm and intimidate all the judges who aren't already on our side". It has worked, up to a point. Plenty of irreversible harm has been done with that unpardonable approach.

The only response possible is out-an-out brinkmanship. The MAGAs are terrorists. You don't negotiate with terrorists.

I think it will all catch up to the Republicans soon enough... the Dems cave, and millions of Americans, many of whom are Trump supporters are left scratching their heads over why their healthcare costs doubled, tripled, quadrupled... or went away altogether. Or why everything else has continued to get so much more expensive.

Of course they can. The Dems shutdown the govt! Even I as a Dem will say that as the Chuck admits it. He doesn't but of course their whole platform is about explaining the impasse - clearly they don't want to sign off on the CR so yes, the Dems want this shutdown.

The premiums are up but when you're sitting home not working ur working and not making anything, you won't look at bills you'll be wondering what to do with your day or why you are working fir no $$!!!

If the Dems just let things be, the premiums would make people mad but now everything is about the shutdown drama thanks to the Dems. And it was only a CR to Nov. in a couple wks the Dems would have had more firepower and leverage when people focused on spending more money on premiums.

Worse, it appears now that MTG is leading the charge on Obamacare premium increases. The world is upside down. The narrative is getting away from the Dems and they look more out of touch than ever even as they claim they won’t negotiate bc of premiums. AAAARRRRGGGHHHH

The Dems are happy to have this aspect of MTG agreeing with their platform. Frankly, it is goulish that most of the GOP are fine with healthcare being too expensive for their constituents.

the house has basically not been in session since July, meaning they haven't been working on an actual budget bill at all.

Committees have been meeting.
Plus the House leader usually just presents his own bill real quick.

How can committees be meeting if the House is adjourned? If that is the case, the it is even more egregious that the Representative-Elect from AZ has not been sworn in.

It wasn't really a clean CR and by asking Dems to support it without concessions, the GOP is asking the Dems to support the BBB, which they had no hand in crafting, so no, if the GOP wants to go it alone, then they can own 100% of it. And what is the purpose of supporting a CR or a budget when the White House simply ignores the funding and cuts whatever programs it wants despite the "will of the people"

This is very different than the 1920's.

Frankly, Trump could have continued without the tariffs and with the Biden economy and could have just kept the ACA and SNAP going and most of the protests would not be happening and it would be a fringe that would care what ICE is doing. But everyone sees how disasterous this is going to be, which is why the anger is there, and it is all on the GOP.
