Another gunman, another elementary school

We need the strictest gun legislation possible and a total ban on all rapid fire guns and extended magazines.

This really had a profound affect on me and my family. We switched sides.

Why do you believe Democrats are fighting basic security measures? Who believes criminals will turn in their guns? Don’t they know cartels have invaded Texas? Perhaps they need to visit Texas and see for themselves.

WE had the "good guys with guns" -- and the DID NOT stop the bad guy with a gun.

I'm pretty sure he was stopped (i.e., killed) by a good guy with a gun, but understand your point.

Unforunately that "good guy with a gun" took over an hour to arrive - meanwhie the cowards with guns just stood there and played with their d*cks while children died.

The "good guys" with guns just stood around doing nothing -- and some were even holding back the parents who had guns (at least one grabbed one at the barber shop he was at, he was a CPB guy off duty).

The point is that arming people doesn't solve all problems b/c sometimes you actually have to have courage PLUS a gun. Which obviously didn't exist for the first hour. I'm just totally sick about this. I can not imagine how raw the rage must be for the parents -- especially of the girl who called 911 (and others) -- little Amerie. My god. She's taking mature action to get help over and over -- and no one is coming? Total cowards. I would go insane on them if that happened to my 10 yr old.

This. Your last paragraph is what is hitting me so hard, thinking about kids waiting and calling for adult help, and the adults knowing and letting them die. The worst betrayal.

What really got me was that they said “please”.

The little girl (I think it was Amerie) first called with her teacher's phone at 12:03 p.m. She called about 8 more times over the next FORTY MINUTES... begging and pleading for the police to come. She was telling them that there was a shooter, that kids were hurt, that some were alive, on and on and on. Call after call. She asks them to come. Almost an hour of calls to 911 by a 10 yr old who is trying to get help and stay alive. And the 911 operator surely is relaying this to the police.... who do NOTHING.

It's unforgivable.

And now she’s dead. My God…..

It's a latino school if it was a white school you bet your sweet ass cops wouldn't be wasting time protecting rich white people kids

I keep reading this take - I don't think this is accurate. yes, a predominantly latino school, but I think also a predominantly latino police force. So this (racism against the kids??) isn't the explanation for the cops' inability to properly/best handle the situation.

They fear the parents not the kids. Also Latinos can dislike Latinos but respect white people more

Do you think this 18 year old would have gone up to cartels and asked them for a gun?

The chief of police should be held accountable. No more liberal anctics. Fix the problem at hand fair and decisively.

21 families mourning. Community mourning. Country mourning. We are all American. We disagree on lots of issues, but dead elementary kids and teachers we all don’t want. Find common ground. We have to do better than petty politics.

I don’t want want my kids to live in a police state of guns everywhere for example, but I’m willing to listen. Can you listen to a viewpoint where access to AR-15s is slightly more controlled.

And just wait for the suicides of first responders who aren’t getting adequate mental health support. It’s not their fault. It’s AR-15s!! Regulate our well regulated militia. Enough.

More mental health services is an absolute necessity.

You cannot force someone into mental health treatment. We need gun control.

Just stop it. That kid bought his gun legally and you know it. And you're totally fine with it.

Focus, you idiot. We're talking about single people, NOT cartels, who independently decide to commit mass murder with guns they purchase legally. Stop trying to make this ok.

Are you going to use your assault gun to fight cartels? Are cartels after you?

How often do you think people who own these types of weapons use them to fight bad guys?

Just get over it. You don't need a weapon of mass murder, you wanna be vigilante.

And who will pay for these mental health services? Conservatives don’t even want to provide money for food for people in poverty. You think they’ll happily let taxpayer dollars go towards mental health services?

Regarding police chief’s erroneous decision - You get what you pay for. No surprise here.

These local cops weren’t the most skilled. Ever been to South Texas?
