Another gunman, another elementary school

Kind of calls the “feared for my life” defense into question.

This led to the stand down. In hindsight, it was the wrong call and contributed to additional loss of life.

Yes, it was a wrong call. Obviously. In a heated situation that happened quickly and I have sympathy for that person who screwed up and must feel beyond terrible.

But what didn't happen quickly was the gradual relaxation of gun control restrictions such that an 18 year old can easily go into a shop and buy two AR platform rifles 2 days after his 18th birthday. This is society's fault for letting guns proliferate like candy such that anyone can access them without any sort of background check or licensing.

Wrong call? That sounds like bs.

Witnesses saw the gunman shoot people outside and go inside the school with the gun, then they were hearing shots coming from inside the school - the parents standing there confirmed. What part of that does not indicate "active shooter" situation?

That's just lies to cover their cowardice.

+1. The DPS guy said they believed the shooter was barricaded in and the children were safe and that's why they decided not to go in immediately. That wasn't a wrong call. That was objectively WRONG because they didn't have all the kids out of the school or otherwise accounted for. I don't need any level of law enforcement training to tell me that. That's just common sense.

Not only can I not believe this decision was made at all, I can't believe 19 police officers STOOD IN THE HALLWAY for 40 minutes and did absolutely nothing to help the kids. WTH?

barricaded in situation? Wouldn't they have been hearing the gunfire?

Not only did they know that there were kids still in the building.

The Police KNEW that children were still calling 911 and begging for help. Those 911 operators are always telling the cops what the caller is saying. The cops KNEW that kids were begging for help and some were still alive along with those who were dead, and they just sat right there and decided that they weren't going to do anything about it. IT IS SO SICKENING.

I'm pretty sure he was stopped (i.e., killed) by a good guy with a gun, but understand your point.

Unforunately that "good guy with a gun" took over an hour to arrive - meanwhie the cowards with guns just stood there and played with their d*cks while children died.

The "good guys" with guns just stood around doing nothing -- and some were even holding back the parents who had guns (at least one grabbed one at the barber shop he was at, he was a CPB guy off duty).

The point is that arming people doesn't solve all problems b/c sometimes you actually have to have courage PLUS a gun. Which obviously didn't exist for the first hour. I'm just totally sick about this. I can not imagine how raw the rage must be for the parents -- especially of the girl who called 911 (and others) -- little Amerie. My god. She's taking mature action to get help over and over -- and no one is coming? Total cowards. I would go insane on them if that happened to my 10 yr old.

This. Your last paragraph is what is hitting me so hard, thinking about kids waiting and calling for adult help, and the adults knowing and letting them die. The worst betrayal.

What really got me was that they said “please”.

The little girl (I think it was Amerie) first called with her teacher's phone at 12:03 p.m. She called about 8 more times over the next FORTY MINUTES... begging and pleading for the police to come. She was telling them that there was a shooter, that kids were hurt, that some were alive, on and on and on. Call after call. She asks them to come. Almost an hour of calls to 911 by a 10 yr old who is trying to get help and stay alive. And the 911 operator surely is relaying this to the police.... who do NOTHING.

It's unforgivable.

I keep reading this take - I don't think this is accurate. yes, a predominantly latino school, but I think also a predominantly latino police force. So this (racism against the kids??) isn't the explanation for the cops' inability to properly/best handle the situation.

I can’t get this out if my head. It makes me so sick to think of all of those poor children who were taught to call police in an emergency because the police would come help them, who kept doing everything you could have expected them to do to try to save their own lives, and the police simply abandoned them. They were not willing to do anything to try to save those kids’ lives.

Gun control now. This can easily be bipartisan. Please Congress, act. Find something to do here. There is middle ground and we are begging you to act.

This is not the time for dig your heels in politics. Work across the table as Americans who all do not want to bury 10-11 year old children. Find something, anything to agree on and ACT!
