CORONAVIRUS/COVID-19 NEW MEGA THREAD

Out of curiosity, I pulled up the infection and death totals for H1N1 today. I was astonished to see how high they were. I don’t remember paying really any attention to that as a news story back in 2009. Was it covered less, somehow less scary, or am I just getting old and less cavalier?

Seattle is first major public school district to close for two weeks. It has over 50,000 students.

Same here. It was right after Lehman and the economic collapse so news may have been suppressed.

Anyone have any idea when life will be normal again? I
am wondering are we talking weeks or months?

Depends upon two things:

1. How much they can mitigate by closing schools, employees working from home and social distancing.
2. Weather - The jury is still out as to what high temperature will do to CV.

So I get HIPPA but I'm wondering if it isn't time to lift some of that. I think people have a right to know who in their community is affected. They are relying on people who test positive to self report their locations and interactions which could be faulty. I'm not suggesting they are intentionally being untruthful but there could be mistakes. I would think in the interest of public health we would have more information about those who have tested positive.

It’s social media too. We weren’t all on Twitter reading frightening retweets.

Is the CDC reporting testing stats anywhere?

Yes, it is on the cdc site in chart form. Shocking, I know, who would think to look there.

Just covered less, I believe the mortality rate was higher.

No, actually, as Dr. Fauci testified today, the mortality rate for H1N1 was LOWER than seasonal flu. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-flu-h1n1-pandemic/swine-flu-infected-1-in-5-death-rate-low-study-shows-idUSBRE90O0T720130125

It didn't spread as far. I remember feeling the same in the beginnings of the outbreak as for this coronavirus -- but it didn't get as far and so petered out.

I had H1n1, and it didn't hit me as badly as the seasonal flu did the next year. COVID-19 sounds very different.

In other news, cases in DC go up to 10, with 2 they can't track exposure. DC declares state of emergency: https://wtop.com/local/2020/03/coronavirus-update-dc-st-patricks-day-parade-postponed/

And where exactly is your official source that ”It didn't spread as far” ??? Give an official cdc.gov or who.int source. Don’t spread misinformation!
