I have a possibly stupid question for those of you who know how a virus works.

Let's say containment had been achieved way back at the beginning, whether contained to China or just a few people here in America.... does the virus then just completely die off? Or is it just allowing time for a vaccine?

Yes. SARS is gone, as is MERS. I don't know if it was ever possible to contain this one but it's possible to contain some of them.

I can't find anything that says this is true, but if it is, THIS kind of stuff is the reason I feel uneasy. I am not one to panic but it's so hard to keep calm and carry on when you can't get good, reliable information. (I'm still carrying on though).

I don't think it will ever be eradicated without ending all intl travel. But "flattening the curve" was achievable - and still might be. So yes I guess it's the latter. Buy time not just for a vaccine but also so that infrastructure can keep pace with the rate of seriously infected.
