Correct but it’s not just cosa out of Wootton bc you want to. Like entire communities have been told to do by some. |
Regardless of what happens, these kids will be fine at either school and their needs met. Other kids at other schools are not so lucky. |
Yeahhhhh that seems pretty disqualifying. Considering if she won she’d be on the board while they were being sued. It would have been so easy for her to just not say that but here we are. |
Magruder here. A lot of people like to talk for us without actually talking to us! You are absolutely right MCPS can indefinitely house us at Crown, a state of the art facility no less. This is exactly why we must use Crown first. Once we are in Crown, there will finally be an impetus on MCPS to pay attention to us and make sure we don’t get ignored year after year. Us being in Crown will force the issue. Us waiting for another decade (two decades?) while Wootton is in line for renovation will result in another whole generation of Magruder kids being ignored. We are a high FARMS school with a lot of black and brown kids, and while some people don’t think it—we do matter. The choice for Magruder is either force MCPS’ hand by going to Crown or wait until a kid dies or is seriously injured—no I am not exaggerating. Also, I would much rather commute to Crown than the hell that is Wootton Parkway traffic. |
All of that may be true but you being there to “drive urgency” does not make money fall out of the sky. Where was magruder months ago to fight for this btw? You can’t show up a couple weeks before the vote and hope they take up an amendment. The time to fight for magruder going to crown (ie crown being the holding school) was before the superintendents recommendation. |

What would be the cost to renovate a high school?
A teardown and rebuild is about $300 million right? What about tearing it down to the studs and rebuilding from there? I know from a efficiency standpoint it's easier to just bulldoze something and build something from the ground up vs having try to build around something outdated. But I also find it hard to grasp that schools need to be torn down and rebuilt every fifty years or so. Aren't buildings in cities like DC or NYC older? Is the need due to lack of maintenance/updates or that there are higher standards here? Some parts of the Magruder area aren't too far from the Crown site and it's basically a straight shot down Shady Grove Road or 370, if buses are allowed on highways. The issue is that there are some parts further out, closer out. But if buses can take the highway, 200 makes it a bit easier. Can't be too different then the Northwood students going to the Woodward location the last couple of years? |
meant to say that there are parts of Magruder that are closer to Olney. But they're not far from 200. |
I don’t think there’s much disagreement that Magruder deserves to be in a holding school before Wootton. But what this misses is that neither would be first in line to use a holding school space - they’re planning to use it for schools that are currently on the CIP. They’ve said repeatedly that a holding school, while necessary for renovations like Wootton, also can be used to expedite less major repairs (like allowing them to replace HVAC systems over the course of 6 months vs. spread out over three summers) and save money in the process. This is good news for Magruder in that those savings could help expedite the County Council cobbling together the needed funding, but obviously bad news in that there is no solution that results in Magruder being placed in any holding school, Wootton or Crown, to create pressure for anything. |
It also at least gets Wootton out of the way to possibly jump Magruder down the line - PP is right that with the 5-10 year timeline, there’s a scary chance of a catastrophic failure being the catalyst for Magruder getting on the CIP. But that’s true for Wootton two and there’s no way to guarantee Magruder’s systems fail first. I think both schools have had the experience of being jumped in line on the CIP, so if Wootton sticks around in need of repairs and Magruder doesn’t get moved into Crown short-term, Wootton getting to jump in line because one of the gas leaks (there have been FOUR this year) finally blows up a classroom or something becomes a real risk. |
There is a lot of creative ways for MCPS to get money. Have they considered selling all their unused plots of land that are literally just sitting there? Where was the fight before? What an a**hole question. While we are truly impressed by the speed in which Wootton families rallied together, this is not reality for our families. A lot of us are working parents making ends meet (high FARMS again). We can’t just show up at board meetings at ridiculous times during the day. But that doesn’t mean we don’t care about our kids. |
Creed was, frankly, absurd. It appears the only reason she got into this was to go against Option H. You shouldn’t run for office for a single issue… Also, while some candidates were genuine, a number were clearly pandering to the community. They got cheers and maybe some wanted to believe them, but if they got into office it would take just a few meetings with MCPS staff for them to completely change their positions and go pro - H. |
You are low income? You have time to post here but not show up? |
Putting in a new system over three years makes no sense. |
Not PP but umm...considering that this is in the evening and most board meetings are between noon and 4 PM... ??? Try to have a little bit of empathy maybe? Or is empathy only reserved for people who agree with you? |
Are they low-income and do they not get any leave or flex time? The Wootton meeting was not during the day. There are thousands of kids between Wootton and the feeder schools, so surely more parents could have showed up... |
