In part, because it's exciting for the kids. It's definitely tougher as a parent, and I think there's a legitimate argument whether it's good right now during Covid or not, but's fun for the kids to play different teams and hang out with their teammates. It's a really good tournament; ignore the people on here, who are either objecting out of envy because their specific VYS team did not go or based on an extremely poor understanding of science and incremental risk. It's exactly the thing that VYS needs to do to attract and retain top talent. Of course it will cause consternation within and outside the club - anybody showing ambition and competitiveness immediately attracts scorn, but welcome to the United States in 2020.

What? You think sending the 12 year team to NC for a tournament will attract and maintain talent? This is probably what you aren't attracting and maintaining talent....you're clueless.

what is the difference between going out of town for a more competitive tournament vs. playing in a local tournament one age group higher?

Bethesda is a quality tournament if you can get in the higher brackets

Wait, so is someone saying that these Vienna teams went to NC to play in this tournament because Bethesda wouldn't let them play up an age group and their age group in the Bethesda tournament wasn't competitive enough for them?

From my understanding Vienna went to NC because of the debacle of last year's Bethesda tournament. Some of the older boys teams had to play shortened 20min halves.
