I heard that Diaz homeschools. I also understand that she refused to obtain a covid vaccination, as needed, when she returned to Gaithersburg HS to teach after the pandemic eased. She refused to wear a mask, as required. Without notice, she stopped coming to school for 1st period because admin would check on her mask-wearing during 1st period. Diaz was given multiple chances to comply with health measures and she refused. Public schools must uphold public health measures. A responsible teacher shows up for the job. That she doesn't believe in these things disqualifies her for me.

Covid is still here. Are your teachers wearing masks now?
The greater message is that she called BS on the status quo that alot of people are tired of and that's why she got the votes

Specifically she got 18,956 out of 84,901 votes in the District 2 member race. Good luck to her!

It is sad that someone as irresponsible as Diaz received almost 19,000 votes. Fortunately, that represents only 22% of the votes and Diaz won't pick up many of the Smondrowkski voters. I think it very likely that Diaz will lose in November.

Not only is it sad it’s a show on how stupid some adults are in MOCO to not research who they voted for

Diaz is unfit for the BOE. Hopefully she loses.

We also had morons vote for Mandel . Ugh

Luckily Diaz is the only moms4liberty that made it through

The pessimist in me thinks she got so many votes bc she has a hispanic last name. And that uneducated voters checked the box next to her name for that reason.

People are going to jump all over you for your post, saying you are a racist, but I wondered if there wasn't something to what you wrote. I have Latinx friends (and other friends from diverse backgrounds) who were initially interested in voting for Diaz, because of her Latinx surname and they want diverse representation. Then, these voters learned more about Diaz and ended up voting for Zimmerman or Smondrowski.

I think that poster has a good point. People saw the last name, wanted diversity so voted for her without doing research.

We must be able to have these types of conversations without fear of always being called racist.

The problem is that there's literally no evidence for suggesting Latinos are the reason Diaz beat Smondrowski. In fact there are a lot of factors that suggest otherwise:
- Smondrowski is very clearly ineffective, nobody can possibly be surprised she is the incumbent with the fewest votes
- Diaz got only slightly more votes than Bethany Mandel (who does NOT have a Latino last name). There is likely a lot of crossover between the two
- Diaz did a good job in her answers to the League of Women voters - she doesn't seem crazy in those answers. My guess is that had a bigger effect than her last name. You have to do more digging to find the crazy but a well-intentioned voter who does some research can easily miss it.

Mandel got more votes than Diaz.

Mandel: 25K
Diaz: 21K

Oops, you're right, and yet nobody is insinuating 25k people voted for Mandel because they like her name and are too dumb to look up what she policies she supports.

There have definitely been posts saying exactly that, on DCUM.

Wow..blaming Latinos for Smondrowski's blatant incompetence. Nice.
Honestly, it’s racist and offensive when people say stuff like that. The worst thing is, is that they don’t realize they’re being racist and offensive. They claim to be progressive and woke, but in all reality they’re blind to their own prejudices and racism.
Come on, they know exactly what they are saying when they say "uneducated voters". They know they are being racist.
Disagree. I think when they said "uneducated, " they meant people like my (very white) husband who, while educated in general, did not take the time to educate himself on this race and was inclined to vote Diaz for diversity before I called him out him for being a bad example to our kid who just turned 18. Made him look at the 411 info at least. Once he educated himself on the race, he did not vote for her, but so many will go to the polls without much research on BOE or judges.
Yeah that's not why Diaz is advancing to the general election. It's because Smondrowski is terrible.
Diaz is up to 21,781 of the 100,239 votes (21.73%). I wish Smondrowski had come in second, but Diaz's second-place finish is hardly a landslide. Zimmerman got more votes than Diaz plus Smondrowski, put together.
Omg. Smondrowski is the incumbent. She has done horribly because she is horrible.

She absolutely won. There are two winners per race because this is a primary. Montoya finished in second place and about 100 votes behind Harris. BOTH Harris and Montoya won and will advance to the general elections.

Hopefully, Harris beats her. We don’t need any more drugs in our schools.

1,000 votes. You missed a zero.

As of Friday, May 17: Harris 32,557, Montoya 31,585.

^^^And I'm tickled by the idea that the people who hate Harris for being an incumbent, and/or supporting the 2020 boundary analysis, and/or supporting inclusive books in the ELA curriculum, will have to vote for Harris because Montoya something something weed.

Maybe it has to do with Harris being an experienced board member and/or the fact that Montoya has no education experience except for her closing out a year as a PTA president at her children's ES.

You're missing the point. For the people who hate Harris, Harris being an experienced board member is one of the reasons they hate her.

Voted for someone else in the primary, but even though I don’t generally want to support incumbents, I will vote for Harris over Montoya. -DP

I'm voting for Montoya over Harris. To me they're pretty similar except Harris is an incumbent and I feel we need new blood.
