Come on, they know exactly what they are saying when they say "uneducated voters". They know they are being racist. |
People are going to jump all over you for your post, saying you are a racist, but I wondered if there wasn't something to what you wrote. I have Latinx friends (and other friends from diverse backgrounds) who were initially interested in voting for Diaz, because of her Latinx surname and they want diverse representation. Then, these voters learned more about Diaz and ended up voting for Zimmerman or Smondrowski. |
Yeah, its tough to say it out loud, but its true. Many people go into the booth with very little knowledge about the candidates. Its just true. Heck, I bet Fitzgerald may have lost votes because they saw that name and thought he was a white irish guy. |
I think that poster has a good point. People saw the last name, wanted diversity so voted for her without doing research. We must be able to have these types of conversations without fear of always being called racist. |
The problem is that there's literally no evidence for suggesting Latinos are the reason Diaz beat Smondrowski. In fact there are a lot of factors that suggest otherwise: - Smondrowski is very clearly ineffective, nobody can possibly be surprised she is the incumbent with the fewest votes - Diaz got only slightly more votes than Bethany Mandel (who does NOT have a Latino last name). There is likely a lot of crossover between the two - Diaz did a good job in her answers to the League of Women voters - she doesn't seem crazy in those answers. My guess is that had a bigger effect than her last name. You have to do more digging to find the crazy but a well-intentioned voter who does some research can easily miss it. |
Mandel got more votes than Diaz. Mandel: 25K Diaz: 21K |
Oops, you're right, and yet nobody is insinuating 25k people voted for Mandel because they like her name and are too dumb to look up what she policies she supports. |
Do people really think Latinos only vote for people with Latino last names? Literally take 2 seconds to think about why that is incredibly stupid. |
It's WHITE PEOPLE who think Latinos are all the same fyi |
Disagree. I think when they said "uneducated, " they meant people like my (very white) husband who, while educated in general, did not take the time to educate himself on this race and was inclined to vote Diaz for diversity before I called him out him for being a bad example to our kid who just turned 18. Made him look at the 411 info at least. Once he educated himself on the race, he did not vote for her, but so many will go to the polls without much research on BOE or judges. |
Yeah that's not why Diaz is advancing to the general election. It's because Smondrowski is terrible. |
No one posted that. |
There have definitely been posts saying exactly that, on DCUM. |
Feel free to link to them |
Diaz is up to 21,781 of the 100,239 votes (21.73%). I wish Smondrowski had come in second, but Diaz's second-place finish is hardly a landslide. Zimmerman got more votes than Diaz plus Smondrowski, put together. |
