It’s not so much the gentrification. It’s the fact that the gentrifiers mostly refuse to send their kids to the neighborhood schools which would have the biggest impact on improving AA test scores, outcomes, etc. Instead they flee for charters or privates and walk by the BLM signs on their stoops every day. They are guilty of the worst form of systematic racism, but they are totally clueless about it.

So parents who care about education should sacrifice their children? Do you realize the non-gentrified can go to charters as well?

Gentrification is not responsible for this. Do you just not grasp that all of Logan Circle was much more dangerous before it got gentrified?

NIMBYs are responsible for the lack of housing, not gentrifyers (who generally make things safer anyway).

Gentrification is literally taking AWAY backyards. DC is for millionaires & homeless folks. That’s it. You can put your ‘hate has no home here’ yard sign up- but that’s not really a thing. I’m not saying another deserves to be shot. This entire situation is tragic. But I am saying the folks who are squeezed out if their communities, can’t afford/wouldn’t even be allowed in those 14th street restaurants, have no pathway out of the cycle of poverty are going to communicate in some other way.
And yes the ‘lock them up’ is NIMBY

This is completely asinine. These shootings are motivated by stupid disputes between young men who have nothing better to do. Sure, addressing the causes of urban poverty might obliquely address the shootings. But the notion that these shootings are somehow the "language of the unheard" is unmoored from reality.

+1 . Young people with intellectual intelligence or emotional intelligence do not do this. There are enough people with impoverished childhoods who move up and out that make this case clear.

It’s more that on the road to equity, which is paved with good intentions, democrats blame the guns first. They are which a huge part of the problem, but democrats also casually gloss over the 80% out of birth rate and single parent households, and rise in teens causing crimes, and basically ignore the lack of accountability from the actual perpetrator of a crime. Democracts are basically 100% equity focused and if that means that wealthy tax payers have to put with rising crime to achieve better disparate impact statistics regarding crime, than so be it. It’s this “I know crime is rising and your city might lose its tax base to tax payers fleeing to the safe suburbs, but you can’t make an equity omelette without cracking some eggs. And those eggs are everyone else.”

I hope democrats lose the mid terms because of this, and I hate this word, but this woke attitude toward crime. I also hope Charles Allen and the other Uber liberal idiots on the city council lose on the local level, but I won’t hold my breath. There are too many self flagellating city dwellers who will allow themselves to be crime victims before they actually get serious about policing. They won’t complain. I’ve lived here my whole life, so I know this town is way liberal.

ThIS +1,000. Residents in gentrifying DC neighborhoods should be taking Bowser & their council membersto task. What programs does Bowser offer to keep young kids off the streets during the year. There is no reason why 12 year olds should be shooting and robbing people.

When is Muriel going to speak the entire truth: As long as young black men are being raised in fatherless homes, with 15 - 18 year old uneducated mothers who may have multiple children with other men, and in homes in which substance abuse is rampant, these kids don't have a chance. Their lives are not valued except as a source of increased government benefits. No "programs" are going to fix that. The fact that they have such easy access to guns is a failure on society, I agree, but without value of life and education in the heart of the community, guns are only part of the problem.

We sent our kids to a neighborhood school for 7 consecutive years. It never opened during the pandemic. It failed all kids, especially homeless and vulnerable kids but also ours. We’re leaving that school for another dcps via the lottery. We have lived here in crime central fir 15 years but will likely move to upper nw. I really dont care what others think. Weve loved our neighborhood and done our part to make it better, but wont risk our lives.

Am I alone in wanting?
1) tough sentences for violent crimes - including automatic 10yr add-on for any crime where a gun was used.
2) social safety net so kids aren't hungry, homeless or hopeless (ie: educational and employment opportunity)
3) serious plan to massively reduce personal gun ownership for all but licensed and psychologically evaluated professionals with a demonstrated need. Ban on all new personal gun sales and a massive gun violence victims tax (10,000%?) on non-LEO/Military ammunition sales together with a gun buy-back program with target of >100k guns a day. National registry/license and insurance requirement for those who continue to own, plus references from 6 non-relative neighbors who agree to take criminal responsibility for your actions. 2A can itself be amended given modern reality. With political will could dramatically bend the curve on gun violence over next 5-10 years - it's personal and public responsibility that could pass on a more mature and safer country for the next generation. We still have adults not vaccinated yet though so...

It doesn't matter what color you are - if you live in a home without a father figure, your chances for a successful life drop.
