She insinuated it happened but he was only 12 so.... he can change.

That is utterly ridiculous.

Boys turn into men but they don't change.

You are the same person you were at 12? Everyone changes.

Sure stats show sex abusers get worse not better.

I wouldn't do shit.

If she went to the police or filed a civil suit, I'd hire an attorney with experience pursuing libel and slander and rabidly go after her.

Wow without even bothering to check if your son actually did it, you'd attack the girl???

If the accusations are not true, that is a completely different question, and not a difficult one for anyone to answer, but OP never said they are not true.

This is OP. Actually, it is a hard question to answer. I'm wondering what you would do if you thought the child were guilty AND what you would do if you thought the child were innocent. Would you do things differently? If so, what would you do differently.

You get him a lawyer ASAP in either situation and you follow their advice. Meanwhile, don't let him talk with anyone about what happened, including you.

This is true. It all typically starts in early childhood when a little boy is indulged.

This happens equally in all income levels, but more wealthy families have more resources to protect their boys from any consequences.

This.

You’re a parent, not a judge, detective, or psychologist.

Things that happen three years ago are not remembered reliably, there are peer influences and other experiences that may alter perception of past events for both parties involved.
