wait list movement

Statistically, the kids should have been prepared for rejection.

Now they should be prepared to not get off of he waitlist.

Reality will find them eventually.

Wearing the school tee, trying to find a roommate, talking about dorm assignments. What a relief! It looks like many colleges are having a very high yield, so glad DC isn’t counting on a WL acceptance. It is also heartwarming to see how supportive classmates are and how excited they are for everyone - regardless of where they are going to college!

I am happy for you and him.

Hasn’t reality found everyone enough this year? It might be nice for the kids to have a little pixie dust tossed their way here and there.

But they’ll be competing with international students from the classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022. And the colleges are desperate for revenue.

I believe what was meant is that there will be even *more* international students than normal due to the pause last year.

I couldn't tell whether that poster was being serious or not (making fun of the current seniors for complaining about their circumstances). Colleges plan for each class to be x% international, so international students are competing only against international students for those spots and domestic students are competing only against domestic students for the domestic spots. They're in separate piles. More international applicants doesn't affect how many domestic applicants are accepted.

That’s a practice, not a rule. People also said that students deferring in 2020 wouldn’t impact the number of students accepted in 2021. The colleges will do what they want to do. There will be a lot of qualified full pay international students that will help the diversity stats look better. Very tempting.

For those getting wait list offers, is your child checking their portal every day, or did they get an email?

It was very wishy washy.
Was it saying they’re not going to waitlist? We read it and are still confused.

It means that their yield came in at or above what they projected. Those commits could still melt away due to accepting a waitlist spot elsewhere or personal reasons or visa snafus etc

I think last year Dartmouth didn't start pulling from the waitlist until July, and the few years before that they didn't accept anyone off the waitlist at all, so I wouldn't hold your breath.

I appreciate Dartmouth's transparency. They're helping kids move on. My guess is that if Dartmouth isn't going to the WL, most of the schools they might lose kids to should they get off the waitlist also won't be going to the waitlist. I doubt Dartmouth will take any off this year at all.

Did you read the Dartmouth email? And that was your take away?
I asked my kid what they thought it meant, and the reply was “keep waiting”.

That little shred of hope is so challenging. If the class is full and deposits were due, even if the wait list does move, there would likely be very few spots. I wouldn't let my kid stay in limbo until July with such a slim chance.

Agreed.
But I can say that as much as I want. It would be nice if Dartmouth was more clear to the students IMO.

So is the way to read it that Dartmouth won't take anyone unless it is a domino where someone who is currently committed to Dartmouth gets in somewhere else or does a gap year and then they have to fill in behind?

Were all the predictions that college waitlists will be long and used this year happensd to be wrong?

Got an email. The subject was clear that is was not an ordinary mass message.

It seems like the proverbial "crickets" when it comes to waitlists. Is the waitlist game over or is it still too early?

The waitlist for my DS specifically said they would not make any notifications until mid-May (if at all). I assumed they said that to be conservative with expectations, but expected some movement shortly after 5/3. Apparently not.

College confidential is reporting some waitlist movement.
