Seeing as Bullis starts in 3rd grade, is coed, and applications were up 20% this year, there's no way they are filling the school with "rejects.". While some athletes are recent transfers, many have attended Bullis since 3rd grade. Bullis has been dominant this year in football, basketball, lacrosse, golf, girls tennis, girls soccer--many of those scholar athletes are headed to excellent schools. BTW, great job Bullis on the "superior" ranking at the Maryland State Band competition! Is there ANYTHING this school doesn't do well? |
Humility? |
Ha ha! Touché! My enthusiasm for and pride in the school took over for a minute. It has just been such a great year for the school community in so many ways. Some folks on this thread are simply misinformed. |
Exactly, as in Hughley and Finnerty |
|
Why are the Bullis parents tolerating this? |

Because they really want to win at sports. |
Why do schools like Bullis and Landon put so much emphasis on sports? |
Because Alumni like it Because the newspapers are more likely to write articles about the football or basketball championship than the band rating |
Finnerty is from Garden City. Not sure he went to Landon. |
For Landon it goes beyond keeping the alumni interested and PR value. Achieving in sports is fundamental to the place. It's in the DNA. Not all, but a significant percentage of the boys participate. Just go to a Landon game in almost any sport and you'll see just how focused and committed they are. The teachers are also the coaches. I have always been amazed at what they have been able to do with what the small student population they have. Bullis is a horse of a different color. I'm guessing that if this business about greater emphasis on sports is true, that they are doing it to change the "positioning" of the school to students and parents. They want to establish a reputation for exellence and make ths school more attractive. Including the rise in school pride and visibility that attend. It's a lot more fun to go to a football game and watch Bullis win the title than it is to go and see Landon or Prep steamroll the Bulldogs. |
It just seems just such a waste to send kids a high ticket school for an education and then get so excited about who wins a meaningless lacross title. What's going to happen when these jocks get in to the job market and they are competing against pencil nosed kids from India and China with advanced degrees in engineering. I guess every office still needs someone to make copies and fetch coffee. |
Bullis has had a long tradition of football excellence. They were once one of the best teams in the country, and the Varsity played U MD freshmen and won. Coach King was very successful in the 80s and 90s. The Redskins just signed Tanard Jackson, class of 2003. Of course it is fun to root for a winning team. |
Evans went to Landon |
I learned recently that the madness about lacrosse is because kids around here actually get athletic scholarships to play this game. |
