Why do schools like Bullis and Landon put so much emphasis on sports?
Because Alumni like it Because the newspapers are more likely to write articles about the football or basketball championship than the band rating
For Landon it goes beyond keeping the alumni interested and PR value. Achieving in sports is fundamental to the place. It's in the DNA. Not all, but a significant percentage of the boys participate. Just go to a Landon game in almost any sport and you'll see just how focused and committed they are. The teachers are also the coaches. I have always been amazed at what they have been able to do with what the small student population they have. Bullis is a horse of a different color. I'm guessing that if this business about greater emphasis on sports is true, that they are doing it to change the "positioning" of the school to students and parents. They want to establish a reputation for exellence and make ths school more attractive. Including the rise in school pride and visibility that attend. It's a lot more fun to go to a football game and watch Bullis win the title than it is to go and see Landon or Prep steamroll the Bulldogs.
