Gonzaga Kairos Vandalism

This entire matter is horrifying. We are angry that the incident occurred and we are heartbroken at the poor way in which it has been handled. It is a complete embarrassment to our community and we as a family feel let down by everyone involved, including the boys, their parents, school staff, retreat staff and, most importantly, school leadership.

+1000 Also a Gonzaga parent and significant donor. I hope Mr. Every and Fr. Planning are reading this thread. Unless something is done along the lines that you describe, our donations will stop, and the only money they will see from us is our tuition payment.

Why do you feel the need to harp on this? Why do you harbor so much anger and resentment? Maybe you just need to take a deep breath.

Maybe you just need a lesson on how not to be so defensive. I'm not PP, but do you think that if the students weren't rich and white, that they would receive the same "slap on the wrist" punishment that these kids will likely face?

Wait, I am confused. Where do you sense my defensiveness? I am just pointing out that people with no connection with the school are whining about it like somehow it effects them. To me, this reeks of hatred and bigotry based on the level of anger in these comments. It's a private school and they can deal with the matter as they see fit. It's really none of our business. But you go ahead and keep pounding at your keyboard if it makes you feel better.

We're trying to teach you that's it's "affect," not "effect."

That's your answer? OK, let's just say you are not having any effect on my opinion with that.

Gonzaga should have Steve Turner mete out some discipline. He would put foot to ass.

Do prospective parents/ families have connection with the school? Not really, but as one, it sure gives me pause. And I assure you, it's not driven from "hate" or "bigotry." Nice try.

Gonzaga is a great school and doesn't deserve all the resentment and hate that percolates in this forum.
I talked to many students over the weekend, particularly seniors, and the majority are heartbroken and depress for what went on during the retreat.
Many kids agree, that as a community, we have to confront what happened and find a solution but unfortunately Ft. Planning and Mr. Every are preventing any discussion or initiatives to solve the problem.
Many students try to set up meetings to help but were censored.
Very unfortunate situation.

+1

Thanks for having some values.

At the same time, they are indeed kids, and all around good kids from good families. Restitution is being made (and then some) and significant community service will be done.

Saying these are “good kids from good families” as if that excuses them? SMDH- you are the problem.

Last week GZ seniors wrote and distributed this note to all the teachers.

DEAR GONZAGA ADMINISTRATION:
We understand that a lot has happened recently at the school. Things that take time to work out.
However.
We are a community of men (and women) for others, by others, and with others. Withholding information that deserves to be addressed, especially when it pertains to members of the community, violates our mission. By leaving members of our community in the dark, we are not only refusing to address the problems that we face but supporting the formulation of potentially harmful and degrading rumors as well.
We are calling for the school to address recent events. Not just Kairos CL, but the numerous other events that have happened in the past few months, especially those regarding the dismissals of students and teachers. We understand that facilitating a discussion about these events is difficult and time-consuming and that privacy between parties needs to be maintained, but it is necessary for the well-being of the school.
Sincerely,
concerned (and ill-informed) members of the Gonzaga community

The Gonzaga leader said “each student has been issued consequences commensurate with his involvement (Dad's donations).” Those consequences (checks), he wrote, “mark only the beginning of a longer process for students to reflect on their actions (learn that some payoffs are annuities).", learn from their mistakes (That Dad can write checks that make everything ok), and make amends consistent with our Christian ideals(growing endowment).”

Do you also speak jive?

Oops, probably cant say that anymore. Too bad, that was a funny movie.

Publicily discussing details while maintaining required privacy is problematic.

This does affect me because I have had and will have kids who go to Kairos at the same Center. It is crazy to think that this is simply an issue which only affects GZ. How will the next kids be treated at the retreat? How will what has been described by my child and many others as the most formative says of their high school experience? Why is it ok for GZ to affect students at other schools?

In addition it affects me because the junior baseball players at GZ have a serious drug/respect problem. Some (not all) were on this trip. Parents of non-GZ kids have called the School and the coach about this problem. I have called for 2 years. Nothing is done. I have no idea if it is the whole team or all the juniors on the team— but there are ringleaders. 3+ years into school where you have no reprocussions from school or parents for behavior issues leads to events like this.

It is a shame. GZ should be embarrassed. The entire community should be embarrassed. At least the seniors (non of whom have been a problem to my knowledge) are stepping up.

THIS is the type of behavior and actions we know and expect from Gonzaga boys. Well done, Seniors. Do not take no for an answer. Your parents must be very proud of you for standing up for your beliefs and ensuring that your school represents your values.
