Do you have to back into every parking space?

I don't mind other people doing it with the exception of when I'm in a parking garage and someone is doing it on a parking space on one of the ramps up to the next floor. Seriously, go to the next floor and back into a space. There's a huge line of cars in both lanes waiting for you.

This is the point of the thread. No one cares if you back in when there aren’t cars around waiting for you.

Isn't that going to be offset by the time you would have to wait for me to back out if I had pulled in to begin with? One way or the other, you are going to have to wait for me. The difference is that I'm less likely to back into you (or your kid or your stroller or anything else) if I'm backing into the space versus backing into the lane of traffic. And before you call me a shitty driver, its not me saying so; it's the statistics that say so. Did you know that 9% of pedestrian deaths occur in parking lots?

Stop trying to talk logic and numbers to these people, they don't care that's it safer, they care that it slows them down from buying stuff. That's it.

You just won the dumbest comment award. If you're on a ramp in a parking garage, anyone entering or exiting their space causes a backup...it doesn't matter if they backed in or not.

This is a MD thing.

Only if you never leave MD. Seriously, do you get out much?

But -- it usually takes me longer to back into a parking space than it does to back out of a parking space. A parking space is relatively small and some precision is required -- whereas less precision is required for backing out. Although I agree -- it is safer to back into a spot and I think it is probably what we all should be doing. If we were all doing it, we'd all get better at it.

Back in if you want just don’t do it if you need to fill your truck up with groceries for firewood or whatever. That’s just going to cause a door ding on the car next to you!

It’s definitely not a thing in VA.

Backing into traffic in a busy parking lot is more hazardous than you think!

It’s amazing how many posters completely disregard that it’s safer to back into a spot because they feel inconvenienced.
Talk about DCUM entitlement at its finest!

I started backing in in my own driveway so I would have better visibility when pulling out b/c children play in front of my home. Then I became better at it and its now a habit. And yes you still get the garden variety asshole who is annoyed, too bad.

Which demographics?

Lazy white chicks, since you asked. They gonna spend all their energy shopping!

I'm a lazy white chick and I don't back in!

Yep. Me too. Drivers behind me hate it but I don't give a shit if I hold them up for a few extra seconds for the safety of the kids (including theirs).

It doesn't take nearly as long to back out into a wide lane than it does to back into a tight space.

I still don't understand how backing in is "safer." Are there any studies that prove this?

If you're backing in to a parking spot, you still can't see kids coming in behind your car. Any criticism you have in regards to "backing out" also applies when you "back in."

I understand why LEOs do it - if there's a big emergency call, they may have 20 cars racing out of the parking lot at once. But it makes zero sense for civilians to do this.

I grew up in DC and live in DC now, but am in MD practically every day and think of this as a MD thing.
