It also sounds like they were only at the school for a few weeks before asking for a transfer. I wonder if getting hand-placed into a program meant to be reserved for kids with genuine talent and years of training had anything to do with it.

The timing is very tight. Williams' first day on the job was February 1, 2017. The application deadline for Ellington was February 1, 2017. Auditions were the following week. Plus they had to squeeze in an admission test and an interview. Not impossible, but very tight. Especially since you have to have established residency already to participate in the registration process.

If the rest of the family finished out the school year in California, could they even have entered the lottery? Would they have established residency? I thought you have to have residency to enter the lottery.

(By "enter the lottery" I mean sign up for MSDC. I know Ellington isn't a lottery. I don't know how else to describe it.)

You can enter without residency. Have to prove residency to enroll.

I think it is smart to homeschool the kid at this point. Poor kid--what a mess.

But I agree that it is a vote of no confidence in DCPS.

I thought he had elementary age children at JO Wilson. This was my understanding last school year from the principal there. JO- not an in boundary Brookland School, but easily accessible by lottery.

Seem that there is a bit racial politics working here. OK to fire the white DME, but can't fire the black Chancellor.

Perhaps a bit of sexism as well. He's the provider for his family, who he moved here from CA - it would be terrible to fire him. She's a single woman, I'm sure she'll be fine.

I'm glad Niles was forced to resign. What an idiot! Allowing his kid to transfer to Wilson. I feel like she was asleep at the wheel while everything was going up in flames around her.

DCPS teacher here. Typing on phone- so things will be spelled wrong.

This makes me sick to my stomach. As a teacher in DCPS it is hard to feel good about the work that we do. Our evaluation system is demoralizing. The work is hard, seemingly impossible at times.

So when our school leaders are routinely exposed as corrupt and not believing in our schools it is a real gut punch.

I feel awful for the teachers at Dunbar. I feel terrible for the parents who play by the rules and worry about the quality of their students schools. And i feel badly for the teachers and staff who are associated with this kind of garbage.

Thanks for setting us all back Mr. Wilson.

Chancellor needs to resign or be fired. He is not up to the job. Why would you choose to live in Brookland if you refuse to use the schools there? No one forced him to live there.
Wilson principal did the same thing. Chose to live east of the river but, of course, her son went to Wilson. I'm not against her son being allowed to go to Wilson given she is the principal there but c'mon - just move in boundary in the first place so you don't need special treatment. Finally the commute or something got to her as she moved to AU Park.

Wait just one second. So she's the one who's asleep at the wheel but Wilson was the one who wrote the new policy and then went ahead and moved his daughter into Wilson. Really? Maybe just maybe she was wanted to make Wilson happy because he was Bowser's new hire. For all we know, Bowser held her up to this!

I’m sorry he has to go! Based on his interview regarding this exact issue last year, he’s a hypocrite.

This is part of the game in DC politics. You have to live EOTP to get the big jobs. But not to worry, wink, wink, your kids will be alright. Barry sent his son to St. Albans/Wilson, Orange sent his kids to Eaton, Fenty to LaFayette, Wilson to Wilson. And many more...

What makes it so much worse is that this is such a sensitive issue in our city and he went ahead and took advantage of his position.

His kids are probably begging to move back to CA. Can’t blame them. Hope he does the right thing as a professional and father by resigning and getting his kids somewhere they feel safe. He is simply no bright enough for the job.
