I recalled that story immediately when I saw this thread!

Okay, how can we parent like the Nigerians?

A New York high school student is making headlines for a big accomplishment.

Augusta Uwamanzu-Nna, a senior at Elmont High School in Long Island, was accepted into all eight Ivy League schools. The valedictorian is the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, who she credits for teaching her the value of self-confidence, humility and a respect for education.

"I think the main thing that has shaped me into the individual I am now is just tenacity and persistence," said Nna. "Though I was born here in America,I visited Nigeria many times. And I've seen that my cousins don't have the same opportunities that I have. So definitely, whatever I do, I want to make sure that it has an impact on Nigeria."

According to the teen, there is no secret or shortcut to academic success.

"I've struggled with numerous classes in the past. But I guess what allowed me to be successful, ultimately, in those classes, at the end, is my persistence and my tenacity," she said.

Nna, who has a passion for science, has received an invitation to attend the White House Science Fair. As for college, she's still undecided.

Parents must be proud!

It's becoming a cliche' now. Some kids obviously know the "formula" and the Ivies are more likely to admit a URM that meets that formula.

Besides, why would you apply to all eight Ivies anyway, if not to try and make headlines?

Laughable that people think she got in because standards were lowered due to her race! How's this for a rigged system?

A family in upper Northwest has three sons. Family name reflects deep roots in the Washington establishment (there's a building named for a recent forebear on Mass Ave). Classic white UMC family. Harvard legacy. All three sons were admitted to, and attended, Harvard.

People *never* get so up in arms over a story like this as they do over a hard working girl, daughter of immigrants, getting into the Ivies. Methinks there's residual racism - and dare I say jealousy - at work here.

If you were a financial advisor to Romney and Trump ( and the legacy family in the NW) do you think they will be paying any Federal taxes? One can inherit millions of dollars from one's family in America, use the inheritance to steal more millions, and get away without paying any taxes. This is lauded in America. Using the rules and the law to get ahead. 2/3 of corporations in this country don't pay any taxes yet when an immigrant applies to 7 to 8 schools, using the rules and law to get ahead, and shops for the best buy (which is what education is about in the US today); this is somehow foolhardy.

This woman is simply brilliant. She is doing what any smart, brilliant, and savvy person would do in this economy. In fact, she is even more brilliant than the Romneys and Trumps with all their inheritance and generational wealth who can only continually brag to the rest of us about their financial wizardry.

As a college advisor, she is playing her cards brilliantly and not leaving her future to caprice and chance.

I wish I could advise all new immigrants to follow this strategy. One doesn't need a degree in quantum mechanics or a Bain or McKinsey consultancy to develop a strategy when college education is running $70 K per year and some not for profit schools are sitting on billions of endowment and income. I am certain she is no trust fund baby like Bush, Trump, and Romney.

What do you think Trump and Romney, paragons of American charm, creativity, and success, would do in similar circumstances?

Brilliant.

I concur!

Just as laughable as Americans worshiping Trump and Romney. They think these men are so brilliant and financially savvy because they inherited millions of dollars, bankrupted many businesses, and still live in the big house on the Hill. Their sole contribution (?) to humanity has the country salivating over their financial genius and success...too ashamed to even reveal their tax returns as have their rivals.

Standards were not lowered, but URM status gave her a boost compared to other applicants with the same stats. It is not racist to recognize it, but it is unhealthy to judge.
Not being a URM, or a legacy, or a top athlete, or poor first-gen should be factored into one's college admissions plan.

I am okay with your last sentence but not with "Standards were not lowered"... So, are you saying her stats are equal/better to Asian/white applicants? Give me a f'king break.

This is not impressive. Show me an Asian or white student who got accepted to all 8. THAT will impress me.
