New York teen accepted to all 8 Ivy League schools

It was not based on merit. She is reaping the benefits of slavery and Jesse Jackson and her family never witnessed those two evils.

She is reaping the multi-century benefits of the likes of the Bushes (GW Bush) solely based on merit...affirmative action for the majority.

She can do what she wants. And I can think and say what I want. She and the others are purely doing this as a sport. The one kid applied to 18 schools. 18! That goes way beyond fine tuning. He's probably only visited a fraction of those.

Nonsense, if you are white, legacy with the last name of Bush you can apply to only one school. The rest of us intellectual mortals are rolling the dice. The lady was smart to spread out the risk. She is not White, privileged, legacy with Daddy on the Board. She is an outsider. She is an immigrant. For all we know she may be very concerned about how these schools and the establishment view immigrants and immigrant families in America given the current US political cycle and climate. She would be foolish to apply to only one school even being number 1 in her class, number 1 on SAT, ACT, with all the awards and accolades. You see when you are on the other side of the tracks you understand fully well there are no guarantees and some whimsical decisions are made based on how you look, talk, and where you come from. She knows this. Her parents know this. Many others on the other side of the track know this. Many in America know this as they are creeping out of the woodwork to support the likes of Trump and Cruz --professed Ivy League grads--who simply want to deport "immigrants". Why would any immigrant family take any chances with applications to the same Ivy alma maters of a Cruz and a Trump? You might be flat out rejected at Princeton, Harvard and Penn by the likes of a Trump or Cruz on the selection committee! Why take a chance? Why risk it if you really want to school in the Ivy League. There is really nothing to lose by keeping all the options open.

We understand why you don't get it? Immigrants increasingly do not trust the process here in America. With Ivy Leaguers like you, Trump and Cruz why would any immigrant apply to only a few schools? De facto, they do not have the same predictable guarantees and constitutional rights as you in the US.

With college and university decisions and the big money and potential big debt at stake this is an increasingly big decision in one's life. This girl is savvy. She understands what's at stake, the big bucks vs. big bust/debt. From a purely financial perspective, in today's market, I advise the same strategy. It may ultimately translate into big long-term savings.

As a parent, I would have provided her the same counsel. Take no chances with the American system. It's unpredictable.

So she's just applying because she wants an Ivy, any Ivy will do. Got it.

I applied to the top schools in my intended field of study because I was there for an education, not a label.

Pp is correct the standards have been so unequal that the best qualified are often marginalized. Many Asian Americans hide their ethnicity to avoid reverse discrimination

You talk of reaping the benefits of slavery? What are those benefits? Is this similar to reaping the benefits of a holocaust? How does one do so? Slavery is akin to a holocaust. I suspect you are unfamiliar with the significance of this brutality.

Did the Ivy league provide you with a good education? If so, I'm sure it will continue to provide her with a good education if that's her final choice. It might not be! She seems to have more brains and may end up at MIT

As usual, this discussion has devolved into nonsense.

+100. I would prefer that my ancestors had never been enslaved in the first place.

I respectfully disagree , I am from the south and my ancestors did have slaves. However bad it was, and I
Apogize, the children of our family used to come
To our family reunions at ease. We worked together
It was the Jesse Jackson's of the world that are separating us

I am sure no one in your family attended an Ivy League school and therefore you picked it for the label. How was the celebratory diner?

Your family must have had land and wealth and were able to attend fine schools for generations? Pass on generational wealth to their offspring. That's so great. I guess you were born into luck.

And therefore, slavery was their preferred state and condition and they would do it all over again for the privilege of attending your family reunion? Let's role reverse. If they owned your ancestors and you were the progeny of slaves would this be fine as long as the slave masters permitted you at their family reunions?

No one did and my top choice was not an Ivy. Didn't get in though so I was stuck with the next best option in my field.

Pp my family was not born into luck for instance during the civil war my great great grand fathers mother died His father was drafted. That left his elderly grand mother to
Care for him. One morning after his grand mother milked the cows some Yankees rode up and demanded the milk. She pleaded that it was for her young grand kids and they harassed her - so instead of giving the milk to someone like
Them - she dumped it on the ground. Fortunately
They did not retaliate this time. So much of history is forgotten or white washed.

No land, no money, no slaves...sounds like only milk.

Sorry, you got stuck with the next best option and did not get into Ivy though not your top choice. Was this your third or fourth option?
