I'm sure there are cases in DC. Think of all the people who have traveled to Mexico in just the past week. Hopefully the cases are all very mild.

There will be cases in DC by the weekend I'm sure

People would complain no matter what the government did during Katrina or other emergency situations. I do remember people being told to leave, yet they stayed, putting the emergency personnel in a bad place. Perhaps if "we" had listened to the warnings it would have been handled better.

If the government over does it then they are over reacting. If the government takes it easy and does nothing then they are not doing a good job. They don't have a crystal ball, they can prepare and they can plan but it is not the same as acting in a real situation.

That's true PP. In this case, if the government acts quickly before there are a lot of cases, out of an "abundance of caution" -- and the interventions actually WORK, then there won't be a lot of cases and they'll be accused of much ado about nothing. If they fail to act because they aren't sure it is yet time, and then things spiral out of control, they will be criticized for that.

Most people did not have the resources to leave. I know how it is to live on a monthly check and the did not have the money to leave. During and after Katrinia it every man for himself. All Im saying is you have to prepare yourself and not wait around for the Gov or someone elses assistance.

Had the boss been traveling recently by any chance? Pollen is really bad, but it is to be expected that people around here will also come down with swine flu. Your husband may have been exposed if he was near your boss.

I wouldn't be terribly concerned if I were you -- cases have mostly been mild. But I'd go ahead and be sure you have things you'd want, right now, in case your husband takes ill pretty soon. And to take care of yourself and your kids, too.

Unless you plan to lock yourself in a bunker or your house for the next few weeks, I think a lot of us are going to be exposed to Swine flu. If we haven't been already. It'll be serious for some people but regular flu for most of us.

But, regular flu sucks. Best thing to do is be sure everyone stays hydrated. I'm sure I'll be mocked for this, but I'll say it anyhow: If hospitals and dr's offices do get overwhelmed in the next few weeks, people and especially kids who need IVs for rehydration therapy probably won't all be able to get it. They are supposed to be setting up surge care centers and places like that for extra patients, but you may well up needing to provide home care. If you can possibly stay on top of that -- pushing fluids on the children "Here, take another sip" that will go a long way towards helping them recover.

So what was the government supposed to do? I do believe there were buses there offered to get people out, people refused. Living from paycheck to paycheck is no reason to stay in the event of a natural disaster.

This flu is most dangerous for those in their 20s, 30s & 40s because their immune systems are the strongest. The virus causes an overreaction of the immune response which can include things like inflammation of the lungs. This is what makes this flu dangerous and scary. Most of the people who have died from this virus have been 20-40 years old.

Anyone who is concerned should read MSNBC.com's lead story right now:

Hundreds of schoolchildren in NYC have it now, and deaths are likely.

Some schools have actually been closed in the US to stop the spread. That is scary.

PP, everyone should be prepared for school closures, IMO.

Even if most cases of the flu are (currently) not causing many hospitalizations, closing schools will help slow down spread and give our healthcare system time to treat the cases that do require medical assistance.

Shady Grove Hospital has fliers available as well as masks. Anyone who comes in with a 101 plus fever complaining of aches is being taken very seriously and tested for the flu (where ever they need to send the labs to be done). Seems the hospitals have all been briefed and are preparing for a wave of infections.
