It's not funny.

Yes it is funny. It is funny to read the headlines and see the pandamonium about something that will likely fizzle out, just like every other scare. You have more of a chance of dying in a car wreck this year than getting the pig flu. Who knows? Maybe this could be our plague. To me it is funny to see what the media focuses on and watch the panic unfold until we all lose attention and move back to the next beauty contestants response to the question of gay marriage.

Actually, that is in fact the concern. I'm not quite sure you understand that.

I do hope that things settle down, and that the high fatality rate in Mexico turns out to be an exaggeration, or at least that as the illness spreads in the US, that we do not experience such high rates of severity.

That seems like a bit of an overreaction, especially about the measles.

But -- do you have a trip planned to Mexico in the next few weeks? You might want to at least stay tuned.

Until recently, I wasn't concerned about "our plague" because I considered myself basically healthy (and blessed). I thought, bring it on, so what. Then I got what I think was the 'real' flu last winter. I thought I was going to die. I've never felt like I couldn't breathe before. It was awful. I'm not so cocky now that I'd be one of the survivors if this flu thins the herd.

Let's say they do a big screen remake of The Stand(Stephen King)-casting thoughts, anyone? Rutgar Hauer as Randall Flagg(too old perhaps) Clive Owen as Stu Redman(can he do a Texas accent?) Julia Roberts as Franny Goldsmith, Seth Rogan or Robert Downey Jr as Larry Underwood? Oprah as Mother Abigail? Instead of Captain Tripps, they could refer to the epidemic itself as Porky's Revenge. Also, got to have Morgan Freeman in there somewhere as president of the United States of America. Coldplay would have to be involved with the soundtrack, U2 as well.

A doctor once told me, when people come in saying that they think they have the flu, then they usually have a cold. When they come in saying, "I think I'm dying", THEN it's the flu.

I got the flu once, when I was a toddler, as far as I know. Ever since then, not that I know of. I do get the flu vaccine every year. But from what I understand, there's no vaccine for this version of Swine Flu.

Hi, 13:26. I'm one of the posters who was debating the flu shot with you many months ago (not sure what side you were on) when you posted the quote above. It made me re-think my position re: I've survived the 'real' flu each winter w/out a shot, vs. surviving what I got last winter. (Still not getting a shot, though.) Just wanted to let you know that what you posted did make an impression on me.

LOVE it! Glad to see another lighthearted poster.

No, I do not understand that. This not going to be our plague. We luckily no longer are living in he 1300s with poor sanitation and primitive medicine. The media has to get a hook (as they are a bit desparate of late) and what is better than playing your anxiety like a fiddle?

Did you buy duct tape after 911 to seal you windows in order to keep the radiation out from the dirty bomb?

Of course there is going to be a higher fatality in Mexico than the US. They have a higher fatality rate for any sort of illness. They have lower sanitary practices, worse air quailty, limited access to proper nutrition and mecical care, cramped living conditions, and overpopulated cities.

Last time I checked California was going to fall off any day now, killer bees a few years ago were taking over, Katrian was just the start of a catastrophic hurricane future, back in the 50s we were heading into a severe ice age, the earth is headed towards a complete melting that will cause the extinction of humanity, West Nile Virus was the plage a few years ago, you'll get Mad Cow disease from burgers, AIDS is going airborn, and don't do be outside this year, you might get West Nile Virus from a mosqiito.

NYC officials: 8 students probably have swine flu

Officials in New York City report that about 75 Queens high school students have fallen ill with flu-like symptoms. Testing is underway to rule out the new strain found in Mexico.

Dr. Thomas R. Frieden the commissioner of New York City's Department of Health, gave an update on the flu cases. He says that at the high school, 200 students were absent presumably because of illness.

He says that on Friday evening, the Department of Health was able to receive specimens from nine of those children who were sickened, and sent them to the public health laboratory.

Dr. Frieden says, "today we're confirming that the laboratory has identified eight of those nine specimens, as probable human swine influenza."

Dr. Frieden says that out of an "abundance of caution" the school may be closed on Monday.

Swine flu fears are growing. Today the World Health Organization chief is warning that a new strain has "pandemic potential". The swine flue has killed as many as 68 people and sickened more than 1,000 across Mexico. Due to the outbreak, Mexico City has suspended all public events until further notice. The disease has also already reached Texas and California with eight non-fatal reported cases.

Look, there's no reason to argue about this.

In my opinion, a swine flu pandemic has started. Here in the US, it has been spread across the country probably by a lot of kids coming home from spring break.

You can do with this information what you wish. Since you obviously are completely unconcerned about this, why not stop reading the thread?

Maybe you'll catch it. That would be really funny!

I am hunkering down for the rapture. Mexico is not on my "last things to do before imminent death list"!

Ok, but now it is in NYC, Texas, Kansas and CA.... so....
