Swine Flu epidemic in Mexico (and possibly US)

Anonymous
"One WILL emerge? How do you know this? Is there some sort of Oracle of the swine flu you are consulting?

I don't see why people don't understand that the flu is Mexico is not more deadly. ANYTHING in Mexico is more deadly, including childbirth, driving, appendicitis, and tooth decay. In case you have never been there, there is a lot of poverty in Mexico and little access to medical care. If you doubt this, just look at how many people flee her for a better life. Half of the population is living in poverty and only 80% of the population has access to sanitation.

Of course the flu is worse in Mexico. If 20% of hte population does not have access to sanitation, what do you expect? "

You really don't get this do you?

The deaths reported in Mexico are being taken very seriously because the individuals were healthy, not even particularly subject to the conditions you listed. A "cytokine storm" is a massive immune reaction in the lungs that leads to respiratory failure which is why it kills someone who is healthy and has a stronger immune system.

A virus mutates and adapts that is what it does. No need for an "oracle" it is simply natural science. The rare event of a new variant of H1N1 jumping species, having the genetic capability to move from secondary host to host, and harm the host has already occurred. Mutation and adaptation now is a given not a what if scenario. In the past historical pandemics, the H1N1 emerged in the spring with the same characteristics and then hit hard in the fall and winter with a more deadly deviation. The cycle is three years.

check the cdc website

You mean this one?

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/general_info.htm

Doesn't say anything about pets. Can you find anything there? If not, maybe someone here can. I really don't find the CDC website helpful for this question, actually.

But rather than check out other qualified sites or call your vet you find this site helpful and informed?

DCUM forum isn't really a "site" -- it is an anonymous discussion forum. But people here are posting links to excellent sources of information. I'm a grownup with years of experience navigating information on the web, and so are most people who post and read here, I presume. Most of us here can do our own research and decide what information looks good, bad or questionable. We also have experience dealing with uncertainty.

Maybe someone else has a link to informatino about pets and the flu.

I know that you aren't supposed to be able to get this illness from pigs, especially from eating it, but I had no idea that people could actually pass this on to pigs. But apparently someone just did up in Alberta Canada.

http://www.vancouversun.com/Health/Alberta+pigs+infected+with+swine/1558053/story.html

So the question of can your dog or cat get this, or can you give it to your animals, doesn't sound completely far fetched, and if anyone had links to reputable information regarding that, I'm sure the original poster of that question would appreciate it.

I really thought the questions about pets was tongue in cheek. WOW, you all are serious. The neurosis demonstrated here has been taken to a whole new level.

Nevermind that they are saying this whole thing is fizzling out...

If the concerned reaction to swine flu is a a neurosis, then what is the anger in response to that neurosis called?

I posted the question about pets. Since this is a zoonotic illness, I don't think it's a hysterical or unreasonable question. (But then again, we do wash hands after going to petting zoos so maybe I am off my rocker.)

it will be resurrected by me in a few months to show what a non-issue this whole thing will prove to be in a few months. I see this as a Y2K, I guess we need some hysteria every 10 or so years.

What part of keep your kids home if they are sick don't you understand? Are you just antagonistic? Or you don't want to take care of your own kids when they are sick?

I take my DD to the gym daycare for 2 hours in the mornings. Should I stop until this blows over? Im asking a serious question...it would be nice to not get flamed for being overprotective or 'hysterical' about this.. Thanks in advance

There's no easy answer now that my crystal ball has shattered! Seriously, we all have to use our discretion and calculate benefits and risks. No one can promise that it will be safe, even though incidence in the population as a whole is still pretty low and local symptoms seem pretty mild. If this is your DD's only exposure to other kids, cutting that out might decrease her risk. But she's not in a bubble, and she effectively has contact with everyone you contact, so there are never any guarantees. If you're asking what I would do... I might consider waiting a week or so if the DD in question is an infant, just to be ultra-cautious. I probably wouldn't wait with an older toddler.
