s/o Ever traveled somewhere and been disappointed by it?

We go to Paris in late spring often and the posts here make me wonder what people are doing and where they are going that they could possible hate it--it has only gotten better in last 14 years!
We also love Vieques but not too keen on rest of PR--would love to hear more about Culebra and specifically Culebra in the summer months. We also greatly appreciate Munich and the rest of Bavaria (Oktoberfest is most fun public celebration in the world if you go with locals) as well as Berlin. Rome last year was amazing in September--which is busier than August I think.
The eastern seaboard--the worst place to go in the summer that I have ever been. Outer banks is akin to the ninth ring of hell. I just don't get it.

Deep Creek Lake. When my husband (then boyfriend) and I needed a quick and cheap getaway to relax after he took the bar exam, we went up to Deep Creek Lake, which was recommended by several people. The hotel we stayed in was horrible (smelled back, managers were rude); there was no place to rent a non-motorized boat like a canoe or sailboat; and when we stopped by the Visitors Center for informatio the jerk working there made racist comments about a polite, well-dressed group that walked out soon after we arrived "Damn Indians," he said. "I bet they're from Rockville." I told him "I grew up in Rockville. It's a much nicer place than this dump, with a far better class of people." We got in the car and drove straight home. Wouldn't return if you paid us.

Tallahassee is different than Tampa is different than Miami is different than Naples is different than Orlando is different than Jacksonville is different than Key West, etc.. Unless you've been all around the state, I'm not sure that you can say you dislike the whole state. And they do have awesome state parks - one of the best state park systems in the US!

That's me, and I didn't see the entire state. I also said that I do believe the state parks are probably awesome, and I don't hate those (in Florida or anywhere).

But the areas I saw where people actually live were so depressing to me. Again, I didn't see everywhere, and I don't intend to. Other people can have Florida.

FWIW, I also haven't seen all of Arizona, but I kind of love it. Only really been to Phoenix and surrounds, and Tucson. Love them both, and would spend more time exploring that state.

I also spent many vacations in the Midwest as a kid, and I like that even more than Florida too. The vast flat cornfields are boring, but not depressing.

I'm perfectly happy for other people to love Florida, and I keep my opinions to myself in person, but on an anonymous board, I will admit that Florida is just the worst for me.

PP, I'm with you 100% on disliking Florida. I've been to many places around the state and found it to be uniformly awful. The Everglades is like hell on earth to me. Alligators and pythons? Yeah, no thanks. Disney? Ugh.

Anonymous wrote:Asheville, heard many great things but was disappointed. Dirty with lots of seedy looking characters milling around.
oh no. We're going there in a couple of weeks

Don't worry. This post is the first time I've ever heard anyone say (err write) anything bad about Asheville. Ever. It's a lovely place and "dirty" would never cross my mind. I'm guessing pp is not much into arts or "hippies", of which Asheville has a good number.

NP here. I went to Asheville a few years ago, and while I certainly did not dislike it, I didn't love it either. I don't recall it being dirty, but it was a little seedier than I had expected. I suppose that the town itself just wasn't as scenic as I had anticipated. I was envisioning more of a pristine, outdoorsy Colorado town, and it wasn't like that at all. The scenery around the town is absolutely, gorgeous, however. I would go back, but with adjusted expectations.

Interlaken. Breathtakingly beautiful, but the most racist city I've ever been to.

I was disappointed by Buenos Aires. The steaks are good, and there are a few interesting sights, but unless you are REALLY into tango, there's not so much going on.

Wow. I found this absolutely lovely.

It is gorgeous but the people are so incredibly unfriendly. WAPO even wrote an article about how unfriendly residents of Liguria and Cinqueterre are.

I would agree with this. I didn't hate it but expected to love it after everything I had heard about it. Vienna was much better.

Another place is Nassau. People are just plain rude and everyone seems like they are trying to rip you off. Loved Atlantis though, even if it is a little too "Disney" for some people.

I also didn't like Alaska but I'm not a cold weather person so the problem was more me than Alaska itself. Winter coats in August are not my thing.

Buenos Aires. Dog sh!t everywhere, thieving cab drivers and shop keepers. Hated it.

San Antonio - The Riverwalk was lovely, but there wasn't really much to do along it - not a lot of shops, restaurants, entertainment. The Alamo was disappointing because I did not expect the surrounding area to be so commercialized and junky with places like Ripley's Believe it or Not.

I never heard of anyone being disappointed by Paris.

I was a little bit. Maybe it had something to do with having a guy in a trench coat expose himself to me in the Metro. Creepy. Also, I had no idea the Mona Lisa was so small. I enjoyed Paris, but it was certainly not my favorite city by any stretch.

Wow, I could have written this same post.
