The standards or lack of standards are certainly not the only problem. They may not even be the main problem. In fact, I'm certain that they're not the main problem. But nobody wants to do anything about the main problems, which are child poverty and inequality of access to a good education. |
Common Core is creating a problem that did not exist. It solves nothing. |
Yep, because that's EXACTLY what was happening before common core standards came along lol. ![]() |
OMG! Without standards, teachers would just let the kids play all day. Isn't that what they did before Common Core? |
Common core lover(s?):
Do me a favor. Do a quick google search for "common core" and then click on "news" and scroll down a few pages and scan the headlines for news stories about "common core". Read some of the articles if you feel like it. But notice something, those of us who have concerns about common core, or those of us who flat out hate it, we are NOT the minority. |
Wow. Thank you for that. I am not a CC supporter--and, I hate to admit it--I never noticed the "news" button. Amazing. |
There were standards before the Common Core standards. But not necessarily good standards, or even adequate standards. The idea of having standards is not brand-new with the Common Core. |
But those of us who have studied the news about CC and who have then done some fact checking have found that most of the news is full of the same red herrings and nonsense that the anti-CC arguments here are full of - and worse. For example, this ridiculous story down in North Carolina or somewhere that Common Core was "teaching Islam" - just because it's "in the news" and generating buzz does not mean it's true or accurate: http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2014/12/20/school-islamic-vocabulary-lesson-part-common-core-standards/ Particularly if the source is FOX News... |
The cynic in me says they are gaining a populace of dumb, compliant serfs to serve their corporatist plutocracy. |
This has already been addressed about a hundred times - they were not dropped from a UFO or developed in secret by big evil corporations - they primarily came from existing state standards, which were developed and vetted by teachers and educators all around the country. http://www.corestandards.org/about-the-standards/development-process/ |
LMAO! You don't think there's a problem with American education? You don't realize that many recent high school graduates are not able to make change or calculate a tip, are not able to point out the Pacific Ocean on a map, have such a poor grasp of US history that they think Abe Lincoln was one of the Founding Fathers, et cetera? |
And, you keep posting the propaganda from the Common Core website. Please give some documentation. The list of the developers does not include teachers. You should know that by now. |
The workgroups that provided feedback included two classroom teachers--and, at least one of them has given some very negative feedback. |
The one paper on the website that writes about the feedback from teachers also includes parents and "others". A lot of the feedback was negative--if you read the paper posted. |
Not really. Written by a crusader whose other project is an anti-fracking effort dubbed "Don't Fuck with Denton." Forgive me for being skeptical of her "reporting." I don't find it to be reliable, accurate, or trustworthy. I find it to be propaganda written by someone who stakes out extreme positions on a lot of things. |
