We are in a poor school in MD and this is not happening in our schools. We are in PG County. We test kids in K and 1st grade on the DRA as there are no "common core assessments" for kids below grade 3.

They may not be required by NCLB, but I'm sure the principals are expecting K teachers to meet them.

We do testing three times per year to determine reading levels. Progress monitoring is done more frequently for students who do not meet benchmarks. Kids also take interim assessments in math and reading too along with pre and post unit assessments in math.

for parents worried about building vocabularly: listen to NPR with them; discuss the news in a way they can understand; talk about current events like politics at the dinner table; explain concepts like democracy, monarchy, dictatorship, etc. I am reading the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to my dcps Title I school kindergartener, and she's hooked. She loves reading, even though she's only at the early reader stage -- getting better every day at reading on her own, but I keep reading books to her that are way above grade level. Great way to build the imagination and vocab!

You are basing everything an above-average child. Lots of kids aren't ready for that in K.
