Haricots Verts (French Green Immersion Charter)

I would be very interested in supporting a French immersion program aimed at FARM families. If this could be pulled off it could be an amazing school. When you provide kids with resources they can do magical things. I've seen it at my charter.

How would that work? Isnt it against charter law to exclude any kid or limit enrollment?

Stokes has a high number of FARM families without being "aimed" at them, doesnt it?

Best way to reach highest number of FARMS student would be pick a location in a high-poverty area where high-SES families will be disinclined to go.

But DCPS is making an all minority, all at-risk, all boys school. Somehow that's legal.

I wouldn't mind a high FARM area that wasn't too terrible to get to for interested families. Some place in NE maybe.

DCPS and Charters don't have to play by the same rules on this. DCPS has application-only high schools -- charters have to take all who apply / get in they a lottery. DCPS dual language/immersion schools can run parallel lotteries to ensure a mix of English-only speakers and students who are dominant in the target language. So yeah DCPS can probably do a school aimed at at-risk, males of color.

Why can't DCPS transition one of the school's east of the river into a French immersion?

Because it is more profitable to sell the land to developers. The DC government is being sued over this as we speak and I hope they are held responsible for this corruption and for selling all children short for money. There should NOT be a mad scramble for crumbs while the rich get richer.

Why not? Would you rather spend your time complaining about the lack of options and your kids' triple-digit wait list number?

Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

What high-FARM area is left in NE that higher-SES families can't/won't want to get to? I'm thinking SE has the only such areas left. Where in NE specifically are you thinking of?

We're very interested if it will have a 12/31 birthday cutoff!

Also very interested in a WOTP or downtown location.

That kind of goes without saying. We all know a French immersion school would be supported WOTP and downtown.

As long as the school made its mission based upon a desire to help level the playing field for FARM and at-risk children and went through the trouble of recruiting and retaining them I'd be in support. I hope this effort is undertaken and I hope it is not hijacked by gentrifier moms looking for an immersion program for their precious snowflakes.

While I cannot stand the term "snowflake" used on DCUM, I do agree with your stance. I'd support it too under the framework you describe. I just think it's better to say it without being insulting about it. Every person's kid is precious to them. But I agree that some kids need much more access to better options and the playing field is indeed ridiculously slanted. It needs to be fixed.
