Haricots Verts (French Green Immersion Charter)

Anonymous
You're delusional. If there was one saboteur, you'd have a charter now. Clearly, the group dissolved. Shows you how much enthusiasm they had for your great white hope ambitions. Nada! I encourage a FARM immersion charter. I just know that's not really what you want. Smelling the rat that you are, it was obvious you wanted a school for gentrifier hipsters, which is what you'll get with z lottery and today's demographic, but the thrill of being a great white hope. Your self-interests was disgusting. Now you're a social worker. Glad you found an outlet for your nonsense.

And you're talking to who? I'm the last PP who you seem to be responding to, but not part of whatever happened before, and definitely not starting a school. I am looking for a school though (especially given my lottery results), which led me to actually read through a lot of this thread. I will say this though, would love to know what your beef is with whoever you meant to address. Did she (or he) steal your husband? Or just get into a better school than you? There's gotta be more to it than you are saying, because someone just saying they want to help low-income kids can't possibly have set you off that badly all by itself. Well it could, but that would speak for itself. So you gonna dish on the real story, or stick with it being about the school? Or are you really that unstable that you would have these feelings for someone you never met and according to even you spent all of a week discussing starting a school with online?

You're crazy. Hence the karma with your lottery results!

This thread indicates they may lead to mental illness.

why would you concern yourself with that? There's some weird pervs on DCUM tonight. Anything for a cheap controversy. The scary part is they want tax payer dollars to start a school! I wouldn't send my dog to whatever monstrosity they could scare up, least of all vulnerable low income kids. They've been through enough!

LOL! I love DCUM! Its been like two years! Just let it go. You wanted a FARM school. One ore more people didn"t. The group dissolved. Get over it! I find it hard to believe the "lone" naysayer caused that because it would seem the critical mass of the group would"ve trudged along. Methinks more peoplebweren"t down. But, whatever. It's over. Get a grip and move on.

I love DCUM too! The irony of this one poster telling someone else to let it go, and she bailed because of one person and is still attacking them 2 yrs later is just too DCUMesque for words!

Anonymous wrote:I agree the group was all wrong. I, for one, am avoiding my high FARM inbounds school because it's not good enough for my child. So, I obviuosly wouldn't be interested in starting a FARM charter. Experts in the field aren't meeting their needs, so I know I'm not qualified to even pretend I could serve them with dignity and justice. I also would not play Russian roulet with my kid's education by embarking upon such a social experiment. Furthermore, I have zero tolerance for hipster protests types who pretend to care about FARM kids, but then clutch their purses and stay far away from them when they see them on the playground. So, it wasn't for me and it wasn't for anyone else. Nor did I feel obligated to whip out my resume to the self-appointed leader. So, I ignored the group after that. Things happen for a reason- we got into a great school shortly thereafter.

Wow, you sure "learned" a lot about this group - including how they dress and how they act on playgrounds - for someone who never met anyone in person and never got past introductions. Interesting, nothing in these 13 pages of discussion indicates anyone else felt the way you did about the group or the goals. And now you're in a great school and not interested anymore. Which sounds like it means the coast is clear for anyone considering this now, because they have one less saboteur in the mix

Wouldn't it be great if the group pretended to disband but secretly kept meeting, just without this incredibly "imaginative" and judgemental person? How cool if a plan for this school was presented to PCSB this summer all fleshed out! Guessing that's close to impossible, but those of us still searching for the right school can dream can't we!
If your goal is to show support to low income children why don't you just go to your inbounds school, assuming you're EofP in a neighborhood school with high numbers of FARM children? Why would you need to start a charter when you have what you need in your back yard right now? Why are you searching for the "right" school when you have a neighborhood school that likely has exactly what you're looking for- a high FARM rate. Or is that not the right school? Maybe you should do some soul searching and think about what you truly want and what your real motives are. I find it hard to believe you have to plead your case on DCUM to get access to FARM kids. People aren't exactly knocking down fences to get entry to those schools. You could walk right in- no problem. I think there's more to the story, some other agenda. Sad really. This is why there needs to b some type of cap on charters. People with terrible motives can try to get access to poor vulnerable kids and on the taxpayer's dime, no less. Beyond awful.

LOL! That person must be your wife or something and your tired of all the bills from her shrink so now you're trying to avenge her. You're way too emotionally involved. Or you're just a DCUM nut case on the prowl. Something is just not right about you and you're obsession with this thread. Get a damn life! But don't start a charter! You don't belong anywhere near kids.

I was in the original group (I think I still am). I was initially pretty excited because I love French and would've loved to send my child to a French immersion school. I also recognized that the school would not be ready to go soon enough for my child to go there, which was a bummer but not a deal breaker.

As far as the dissolution of the group, I think that we should've met in person before trying to dive into a ton of detail about process, visioning, etc. It was too soon for those conversations, and having them happen exclusively online between strangers led to a ton of assumptions about people's motives and bruised feelings for whatever reason. I also think that the main reason that the meeting didn't end up happening was scheduling - there just wasn't a time that was good for everyone and it seemed like people felt that everyone had to be included that first time.

I spent some time reading all of Yu Ying's paperwork to see how they did it and recognized that it was going to be a lot of work. I wasn't necessarily opposed to working hard, even for something that wouldn't directly benefit my child, but it really seemed like there were some specific skill sets needed that I personally do not have.

All of that said, if anyone wants to restart the group, I would love to come to the meeting. I know a lot more about how education in DC works now (in both public and charter contexts).

I was also in the original group and had a great deal of excitement. That soured when, as some have described, premature conversations happened online as opposed to in person. I felt torn about perhaps unintentional improper motives from the expressed desire of steering the group in certain directions well before that was appropriate IMO. We should've met, which was difficult in and of itself, and then fleshed some preliminary things before potential visions were stated. It was also uncomfortable for someone to suggest we provide our resumes, which, while I admit I don't have a background in education, seemed invasive since we hadn't met personally. That said, I still believe a French immersion program would be great for the city, though my children won't attend. We're in a great language charter now (thank goodness). My suggestion is for anyone with interest to start a new thread and avoid some of the pitfalls of this group. First things first- meet in person! I would suggest to someone who wants to take the lead to find a place and time and send out a thread where you invite interested people. I would come and would like to help out, though my own children won't benefit. There are a lot of people in this city who would like to see more programs for all kids. I would also suggest that while you might have good motives in steering the program this way or that, keep in mind that people are sensitive to attempts to limit enrollment based upon whatever criteria you pose. The lottery, which requires admission solely on the basis of lottery "luck" (and/or having a sibling or being a staff), won't allow you to show a preference to certain kids. You can encourage families to apply (for example targeting Francophones), but you can't give them a preference. Good Luck to whomever wishes to pick up the reigns!
