You are doing very well. |

When I started working at 23, I was lucky to make more than I needed and so maxed out 401k ever year. I didn't work for that long and haven't worked for many years, as I SAHM now, so I only have a little over $50k in an IRA.
My husband (also 34) started maxing out 401k when we started dating. He's at about $100K now. We have about another $300k in other savings/investments. We have consistently tried to live below our means and not get too comfortable on his big law salary. |

I am 47 and have $692,000 saved in all my retirement funds (401(k) and IRAs)
DH is 50 and has $617,000 saved for retirement. |
I'm in Network Security. I've just been very disciplined since graduating college. Still driving the same car, haven't taken too many vacations, obviously made a decent living and saved. Biggest challenge was buying a place that dropped 30% in value, but I was determined to pay it down and be in the position I'm in today. |

Forgot to say I'm single mom with one kid - only $3K saved for college |
|
I'm 43 & he's 49. Combined, about 1.5 million. We make a combined income of $275K.
One kid already finished with college, two still in college (one on a full ride and one paying out of pocket), and one in HS (plan on similar scholarships/paying out of pocket). Mortgage fully paid off in 4 years, which is our only debt at the moment. |
|
28yo, about $10k, current HHI $55K.
I spent 5 years making about $20k and I'm a single parent(don't receive child support) so while I feel super behind, it's not that bad considering the circumstances. I have no college savings for 4yo DC though. And I don't own property, but I am debt free aside from student loans, with 1mo living expenses in the bank. |
| 34 and 35, $405K in 401k. HHI is about $450K. We should have more given our HHI but we took a huge hit on a condo we bought in 2005 (had to pay almost $100K to get out and we needed to get out). We also have significant student loan debt that we are whittling down. We do have over $50K in an emergency fund. |
Is your DC in school now or are you still paying childcare? You have time to catch up, no worries! |
He's in school, but I pay for aftercare. And I'm supposed to get $100/wk in CS, but rarely do (I didn't include this in my HHI). When I do, it goes towards medical expenses or summer childcare tuition. I do have about $600 in a savings account for DC (I put $50/mo in this), that's my buffer if I don't get enough CS to cover summer stuff or medical. I do currently have about $800 in medical debt from when he broke his leg this fall. I'm not quite paycheck to paycheck (I'm able to save about $200/mo in savings and $200/mo in retirement-my company matches the retirement) but it's close. I am however, one emergency away from disaster, so I'm trying to save as much as I can. I spent 2.5 years on government assistance and have NO desire to ever feel that desperate again. |
I'd say you're doing great! Way to turn it around! |

Me: 41yo, single, 1 kid. $178K (Roth, 401k/403b) HHI about $73K. Nothing saved for college, he's an infant (yes, I'm one of those "old moms" this area has so many of). His college expenses will take a back seat to my retirement, though. There's ways to work out the finances of college -- loans, scholarships, going to community college for a couple of years -- but there's no scholarships for retirement. And I don't want to be a burden to him.
I don't really know how I'm doing compared to others but I'm plugging away at it. The kid is a money suck, of course, but I love him anyway.
