Age: 46
HHI: $200K
Retirement Savings: $1.2M
Investment Property Equity: $300K

I have another $250K in primary residence equity, but I don't count that because I don't intend to downsize in retirement.

me: 42, have saved 200k. Started my first 'real' job at 32, since I was in grad school, getting a phd and fellowships until then. Salary is under 100k.
DH: 49: has saved 250k. There is NO excuse for this, but poor planning on his part, since he's been working since 25. Salary now at 150k and I make him max and he will do 'catch up' once he hits 50.
We have 3 kids, who will be heading to college when we retire.
the only thing that helps me sleep at night is knowing that there's a trust that will probably cover three college tuitions and give them a bit of money for house downpayments, etc. But I worry about our own retirements, at this rate, although if I stay with this job (that I'm starting to hate) I'll have a small govt pension.

Isn't 550k good for mid 40s couple?

It's solid.

Especially with the trust fund for college tuition. Honestly, if you try to keep up with the joneses on DCUM you will make yourself crazy. You are doing very well - better than 99% of all Americans. Keep saving, but relax and don't worry so much.

Me 200k salary. 331k in 401k at age 34. Makes me very nervous. BUT - I'm now putting at least 50k into retirement every year and hope by age 40 this will have paid off worth another 300k going into the market. My employer provides a very generous match and a separate contribution to a pension that is a defined benefit. I also should inherit a good amount but don't count on this.

Over 300k before age 35 makes you nervous, why? 3 yrs older than you and just hit 300k this yr and never felt THAT far behind.

I was a moron in my 20s and wasted years not maxing out. Figure I'll pay for it later? Only saving grace is I have a job that will help me put at least 50k away a year.

Got it. You'll do fine. I started at 26 (professional school) and am at the same place as you at 37; I feel like if I can get to 500k by age 40-41, I'll be able to "relax."
