28yo, about $10k, current HHI $55K. I spent 5 years making about $20k and I'm a single parent (don't receive child support) so while I feel super behind, it's not that bad considering the circumstances. I have no college savings for 4yo DC though. And I don't own property, but I am debt free aside from student loans, with 1mo living expenses in the bank.
Is your DC in school now or are you still paying childcare? You have time to catch up, no worries!
He's in school, but I pay for aftercare. And I'm supposed to get $100/wk in CS, but rarely do (I didn't include this in my HHI). When I do, it goes towards medical expenses or summer childcare tuition. I do have about $600 in a savings account for DC (I put $50/mo in this), that's my buffer if I don't get enough CS to cover summer stuff or medical. I do currently have about $800 in medical debt from when he broke his leg this fall. I'm not quite paycheck to paycheck (I'm able to save about $200/mo in savings and $200/mo in retirement-my company matches the retirement) but it's close. I am however, one emergency away from disaster, so I'm trying to save as much as I can. I spent 2.5 years on government assistance and have NO desire to ever feel that desperate again.
